Hello Everyone,

I feel like making an outline out of this thread, so here are the main points of my situation:

Scenario:

- 6MT '04 Z w/ 28,900 miles

- Talked to my service manager about the grind I tend to get from 1st --> 2nd when getting on the car hard. It's probably happened less than 10 times since I've owned the car. We decided that it's because I don't let it warm up. I agreed that may be the case.

- I tell him I plan to swap out to Amsoil tranny fluid and install my new Ingalls Stiffy engine damper to encourage smoother shifting under load.

- He says that seems like a great plan.

- He also says I could do those two things and let him put a new
transmission in my car under the powertrain warranty.

- I say I'll think about it....

Note: Transmission shifts fine. No grind under normal driving in any gears...and no grind in all seven of the all-out runs from 5 --> 80 I just did. I made sure I let the fluid warm up this time!!!

Conclusion:

- MY BAD...I tried to quick shift from 1st --> 2nd when the transmission was cold

- Do I take the transmission or not?
....spoke to pops and he says I'm an idiot if I don't, but I want your unbiased opinion.

My powertrain is timed out in April '09

 

Second Question:

The mechanic who would be installing the transmission said to pick everyone's brain on the forums about what kind of shift bushings and linkage upgrades I could get to make the shifting go from good --> great. He has polyurethane in his mustang he said.

Keep in mind that I am not familiar with the terminology, I just could have sworn he said something about linkage and shift bushings. So, is there an after-market for the Z in those areas and, if yes, what should I "bolt on" to make the new stock tranny that much better (...if I decide to get it replaced). Solid tranny mounts? Or is that stupid on a non-tracked, but spiritedly driven, (N/A) Z?

Seriously if I were you I would do the swap with the dealer. The 03 and 04 had tranny issues. I believe the one they replace it with is an 07 so it up dated and stronger. Go for it before its too late!

I can see a possible cost to you for a "free" transmission: the clutch.

 

well if it's a new, free transmission...i'd go for it

 

It would be both of those things.

Anyone have any idea how the new transmission I would get differs from what came with my '04, and how about some info about post #2 above?

There's a lot said in those first two posts, I know, but I'd really appreciate if you shared your thoughts / opinions / knowledge

 

BUMP people!

 

Get a new tranny. In my 03 Silverstone (64K miles) I had it swapped out twice before it got totaled. Then on my current 03 PPW (78K miles w/40K mines), I'm still on my original one. If it's new, they'll replace the clutch and tranny. Make sure it's the most up to date tranny. Throw in a flywheel at the same time since they're pulling it out.

 

You're saying they'll do a clutch too with the new transmission?

I will make sure it's the most up to date one too. I wonder if anyone knows the serial # or whatever that will help me identify. I trust my service shop though, so they should be honest.

I really wasn't ready to spend the money on a new flywheel.....

 

Mine has the same problem from 1st to 2nd when it's cold.
I brought my 04 z for oil change today and talked to service guy about this.
he told me to bring the car back during the weekdays so they can diagnose it.
i think they'll give me a new trans.

 

Each time I had my tranny swapped they gave me a new tranny. If you were ever looking to put in a lightened flywheel, this would be the time to do it. It's FREE labor! Just make sure when they install it, they do it correctly. They reversed my JWT initially and the engine wouldn't start.

 

If you're being offered a new transmission I would take it... And while they have it apart you could get the JWT clutch and flywheel combo and call it a day.

 

I am leaning toward what everyone is saying about getting the new tranny.

I think what I will do is wait to do it though, and research/save money in the process so I can upgrade my clutch and flywheel combination while I am at it.

I technically do have a year til the Powertrain is up, so I just need to cross my fingers that the same gentlemen are there at the service department who are willing to replace my tranny today, or else the deal may be off.

I was going to replace my transmission fluid with synthetic, but I might as well wait to do that too.

Thoughts on my plan of action?

 

Ummm...yes I take the free transmission. They have gotten better as the years moved forward (except maybe the '07 clutch issues lol) but I think you'd be silly not to take it. I wouldn't even wait man -- they are offering this now. Do it while they are willing --- I am surprised they even offered you that.

Also, if you are, GET a flywheel. You don't really need the clutch since yours has hardly any miles (assuming they don't change that too), and the lighter flywheel will have a very noticeable gain. In fact, when I need a new clutch, its getting a flywheel as well.
