I've been told that short shifters usually remove the stops that don't allow for pushing the gear beyond what it has to go to go in to gear. I'm not too sure on any more of the specifics but that's basically how it was described to me.

there is a picture of the NISMO shifter in the link I provided. It is a direct replacement for stock, there are no other changes to the gearbox, linkage, otherwise. Same with the Stillen.

Description from Stillens site:

STILLEN is proud to offer their line of short throw shifters for popular applications. By shortening the travel of the shifter you are able to achieve quicker, more confident gear selections.

Our short throw shifter reduces shift throws by nearly 60%. The solid construction and durable polyurethane bushings offer long lasting performance and guarantee that this vital part of your drivetrain will never let you down.

-Made out of 6061-T6 CNC machined billet aluminum
-Reduces throw by nearly 60%
-Durable polyurethane bushings
-Direct bolt-in, no modification required
-1/4 inch shorter than stock, 3/4 inch reduction in throw

I got it because we had some overseas customers in Italy who wanted them, so when I ordered theirs, I ordered one for myself as well.

I don't get why more people don't run short shifters then.

That's because the notion on these forums is:

short shifter = very bad modification.

I think the stock shifter is fine.

Here is what my friend wrote about the issue: "All these are is shorter shafts, so you wouldn't mess anything up. The ones that have the potential to mess things up are the ones that change the pivot point of the shifter, but I think that's just with a car with cables for shifting like mine. Your car since it's rear wheel drive, probably has a shaft going directly to the transmission so a shorter shaft will mean shorter throw for shifting. You could probably just cut your shifter if you wanted to make it shorter."

The ones that work effectively are the ones that change the pivot point. The ones with the shorter shaft are just "short shifters" IMO and hackjobs.

yeah I mean I'm not worried about the length of my shaft...I've never complained before. But you're telling me there is a specific point where it should be placed to make it work the best?

eh, someone needs to go back to physics class

http://www.exrx.net/Kinesiology/Levers.html

properly installed neither the Stillen nor NISMO could or would cause any damage to any other part of the drivetrain. They both work as advertised without added noise

lol well I guess thats what I get for trying to overload my brain haha. I think I sat here for like 45 mins racking my brain trying to explain it to myself. Just needed a 9th grade science class refresher.

lolol I know how it goes! But its amazing how all the crap you learned way back when comes back to haunt you!

hellsolider08 - you can't reproduce the feel of one car to another...if you want an RX8 type feel, you'll need to buy an RX8 (and order out for lunch as all the Z's pass you )

seems like people are starting to confuse short shifter with short throw shifter. not really important, i enjoy having both done and from what the stillen description says it sounds like it also does both.

PS: osin, your friend doesnt have a clue. cable short shifters dont change the pivot point, rod style short shifters do.

^ I actually didn't know there was a difference

I've also read a lot on this forum saying short throw shifters mess up the transmission/synchros, due to the excess stress and strain.

It's one of those mods that make you drive the car harder.
