Stillen Supercharged
I actually took the car to Stillen today and they feel like it might be the AEM intake that is made of aluminum and heating the air too much that is causing the ping. Steve Millen himself took a look at the car and was very helpful. I am taking the car to them on Tuesday and leaving it with them until they fix it. But here are some pics and hopefully these pics come out ok. More updates to come. They did not Dyno the car but I saw a 307 RWHP dyno in 5th gear at 185 degrees of another guy's who has the supercharger installed .

my suggestion:
remove the inner fender block that is connecting the driverside fender area from the frontal inlet area (where your grille is)
this way, the AEM can get air while driving... i posted this b4 but i dont know if people have seen it.. but the way the front bumper is designed, the location of the AEM is not getting any fresh air and the intake temp just keeps climbing in the car even when driving.... a cure for this is to open that chamber to air flow from the front of the car.... this is the stagnation point of the car, aka there is a pressure zone created when the car is driving.. basically air will go to ANYWHERE you port it to.. so if i were you, i'd make some type of channel from the front of the car to where your AEM filter sits to get more cool air....

Car feels great with the charger. My only problem is the slight ping every once in a while. Has anyone experimented with any heat absorption covering for the AEM intake to allow it to cool a little since it is made of Aluminum? Any other easier fixes besides running some sort of additional cooling piping that leads to the intake. The temp on the car doesnt move at idle but plug in a diagnostic and the temp goes up about 20 degrees when idling at a light.
Why don't you make some sort of ram air tube that will force air from the front bumber into the piping. (I think a/c ducting will work.) Or you can get some boat blowers and use it as a fan to keep away the hot air.
what about removing your reflector? or cutting a hole on the underside of the panel directly under the filter and putting a mini scoop leading up?
what gas are you using? try changing to Mobil 1... or something... is the 7th injector running correctly?

I am going to take a look at some sort of tubing that'll lead directly to the AEM to pipe in as much cool air as possible. As far as I know and Stillen knows all else, including the 7th injector are working fine. I am defintely using premium unleaded which is 91 octane out here in Cali. I would use some sort of octane booster if it wasnt so darn expensive per bottle. If anyone knows where to get some octane booster at a decent price let me know. I mean the ping only happens in some situations and not always and is sometimes hard to re create. But either way I defintely do not like the fact that the AEM is warming the air drastically with it's aluminum tubing. I definitely need some sort of cooling mechanism for it. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Can you go back to the stock intake just to see if the AEM is really doing anything? That way if you still have problems you know that your car needs additional tuning or Stillen needs to work on the S/C a little.
If the problem goes away then you'd know to focus on the AEM or maybe just leave it stock.

It seems like you might just want to take off the AEM. If it's producing enough heat to cause detonation then most likely you are sacrificing performance with it too. You might see better HP gains without that unit on there.
Intercooler for Stillen is being tested now. SHould be available in the next couple of months. They are also coming out with a larger sueprcharger for the Z in the next few months also. I was there when they were discussing it. As far as my ping it is gone now. Put stock airbox in there and a little octane booster and it's done wonders.
1. FYI, check out HCI (Hot Compact & Import magazine Oct 2003). You will find 13 page article on the stillen SC car. I assume those reading this thread might be interested.
2. How much whine does the Stillen SC make? Does anyone know if it is as loud as the ATI SC?
Sorry for hi jacking your thread.

If your running the Stillen SC and don't plan on an intercooler upgrade, you may want to consider a good water injection system. WI is very effective for elimination of knock.detonation and keeps the combustion chambers free of carbon build-up .
Check out ERL/Aquamist of the UK, they have extensive knowledge and system choices. Also note that WI is very effective even when used in addition to intercooling , it often allows ~+2psi to be run (ie. smaller pulley).

With the AEM intake on at full throttle the Stillen Z screams like the loudest baby is flying down the street. So loud that everyone turns around and looks. At regualr driving no one even I cannot tell there is anything different about my car besides the Stillen exhaust. Now I have my stock air box in there and the whine is barely able to be heard even at full throttle. At idle there is absolutely no whine of any kind. At startup there was this 10 second whine but that was due to the new bnelt that was tightened at Stillen. I know it isn't the ATI procharger but I am confident with Stillen's stuff and it was evident by the way they treated me and kept my car for 5 days diagnosing a slight ping I had mentioned to them. When the intercooler arrives I will be the first person in line at Stillen.
Great to hear you got your ping issue all take care of man! I've been planning on going with the Stillen SC to get the instantaneous boost w/ the always welcome low end oomph. Maybe when they do release their upgrade levels for the package, then you'll have more than enough power to launch w/ a cobra from a standstill and hang if not beat it
. So they might be coming out with a bigger SC? I wonder why go bigger when they can simply change the pulleys?? Hmm... Enjoy man, sweet setup!

I asked them why a larger supercharger and they feel they have maxed out the current charger to its maximum. Who knows but I defintely want to swap out my pulleys and find out if I can indeed get more power out of my SC right now. IF anyone knows how let me know. I am also looking for suggestions on my next upgrade? flywheel? pulleys? headers (might be a little too loud)? etc.
