Unhappy I redline and my engine popped

well i was driving all mad and stuff and i was shifting from one to two and then on the way to third i was distracted and forgot to shift. it reved pass 7k rpm and then i felt a jerk and kinda of a popped and the car slowed down.

i just want to know if i should bring it in to get it checked out or if it is ok if its the first time it happen.

the car drove fined again after i put into neutral and then put it back into 3rd.

serious question.

Sounds like you hit the rev limiter.

the rev limiter only saves you in the case of the OP, an over rev under acceleration....a mechanical over rev due to down shifting is bad. no rev limiter can help you there. even after a bad mechanical over rev, the engine can appear to run just fine, even for quite some time...yet be only moments away from total failure. i'm not as familiar with VQ's, but on the S2000's F20/F22 engine, more than likely you would damage your intake valves, and at some point, the valve would fail, fall down into the engine...and boom. this could happen with any engine though...if you "floated" the valves...beware...

Actually, you should be fine. The rev limiter cut the fuel delivery to your engine. It is designed to save your engine from catastrophic damage. Those saying you need a new engine are clueless. Over-revving your engine, hitting the rev limiter, and the fuel cutting and other fail-safes occurring will not blow your motor. That is not to say it COULD not, but to say that it DID is not correct. You may have a problem, but not very likely at all. They also set the redline/rev limit lower than what will blow the motor for this exact reason.

Distracted?

Do yourself and buy an automatic.

You don't even know what a rev limiter is...

How old are you?

I was on the track in a straight away one time, I though I down shifted into 3rd and was in 1st gear. The car revved to 8K. I slammed the clutch pedal down the split second it passed 7K. It went the entire way around to 8K RPM and I shifted into neutral before it got any further. I probably saved my engine. But this was about 4 years ago and my car has been fine ever since.
