Default 150,000 miles, what should I do?

OK actually 147,994...

So my Z has great since December of 02 when I first got her, but she is showing some signs of aging.

When the engine is cold it chatters like crazy and I seem to be missing low end power. When its warmed up everything seems pretty good. The Z is now consuming oil.

So what do I do? I know I want to keep the car, but do I live with the oil consumption, chattering and possibly missing low rpm power? I would rather not but I dont have unlimited funds also.

I wouldn't mind spending up to around 3 grand fixing her up, but would that be long term? and would the Z be back to her tight self is that even possible.

I need to take her in to get a compression test and quotes first I guess? anyone know of any good shops in southern cali?

Keep driving it man or upgrade to a newer engine or short block which i have seen in the vendors section for about 3K.

Celebrate on the 150k mark! When the engine rattles, does it also idle low? SES light on? I'd definitely go with a compression test, check 02 sensors and maf sensor(s). I had the same symptoms with my older truck around 150k. Low idle, engine shakes and low end power loss, not to mention crazy fuel consumption. Turns out my lower o2 sensor was shot, maf sensor was dirty causing the engine to misfire. Also I have discovered that #2 and 3 hole had bad compression due to bad excessive wear on the exhaust valves.

If the body and enterior are in good shape Id say put some cash into it and keep it.With that many miles nobody is going to give you a decent price for it anyway.

A compression check is a start. Fuel injectors may also need to be inspected.

Do a full tuneup. Try to eliminate any low cost problems first like a dirty maf, bad plugs, dirty pcv valve, etc. Fixing all that stuff is relatively cheap and may need done anyways. If it still isn't running well then it might be time to sell.

With the amount of miles he accumulated, selling is not advisable. Fix her up and use for another 150k!

Not worth selling. I think Mike@BlacklineMotorsports or something has like 180k miles on all original components. Itll be better if you keep it.

all cars consume oil by burning or blow-by, no big deal unless its massive amounts. i would get an engine rebuild kit(not that expensive), replace the 02's, plugs, injectors etc, sounds like you have enough to keep it going past 200k, good luck

that is the goal. I just got married and the mothership of my company is going bankrupt, Tribune. So a new payment or fully built block may not be the best option for me.

your looking at a junkyard swap if you want to be done for 3k.by the time you add labor and incidentals you might even exceed 3k,depending on what kind of used motor you find.

Wow, nearly 150k on the chasis.....and rumor someone has 180k! Dayum, you're probably one of the few original owners that kept the first production Z's.

As far as keeping the car running smooth, its worth investing in it. It wouldn't make sense to sell it, as not many people will buy or you will loose out on a perfectly sexy sports car

Maintain it until it dies. There's no reason to get rid of it at this point.

Hopefully you can get a few more years out of it... enough time for Nissan to fix any first-year issues on the 370 as well as get rid of it's butthole in the middle of the bumper.

Good luck, sir.

My G35c just turned 122k and still is my daily driver and track car. Still runs great and don't have any problems (aside from a dead drivers door lock). I am no expert but I have spent alot of time on Bob is the oil guy website researching oils and addictives. I would suggest trying the following products to see if they can help get your engine running better.

1. Pick up some Seafoam from your local auto parts store. Pour the recommended amount into your oil and drive about 50 or more miles with this stuff in you oil. Rev the car alot while driving. Change your oil right after this drive you don't want to leave it in the car as it thins the oil. This is a petroleum based product and can also be used in your gas tank. I used this on my dads acura Truck and after a 30 minute drive the ticking noise from his engine that was driving him crazy for months is gone and has not returned.

2. Get two bottles of Auto-RX, http://auto-rx.com/ Use it with regular Castrol oil per directions. Very highly praised product on BITOG for engine cleaning. Check out the website and see all the things it can do. Also helps engine seals to prevent oil leaking/burning.

3. Pick up some CRC MAF Cleaner, remove your maf sensor and clean per directions(replace air filter while you are at it)

4. Use Techron for a few gas fill ups to clean injectors.

5. Use synthetic oils, I really like German Castrol Syntec 0w-30. Its a Group IV synthetic and much thicker then most 30w oils. You can get it at Autozone only.
