Default Help!! No 5th or 6th gear!!

I took my car to a local tire shop to get a nail removed and I made the mistake of letting THEM drive my car into the garage. I noticed that the employee had a hard time finding reverse and even killed the car. As I was driving off, I noticed that the gear box felt a little funny. So when I went to shift into 5th gear, the shifter wouldn't go into gear. I had the same problem with 6th gear. The reverse still works, but 5th and 6th won't. When I move the shifter over towards 5th and 6th it feels like I am hitting a wall in the gear box. Any ideas what it could be and the cost? Oh and yes I am going to file a complaint and make them pay for this ****!!

I forgot to mention that when in gear, the shifter has A LOT of play instead of being "tight"

Sounds like they bent some linkage, may be as simple as bending it back.

good luck getting a garage to pay for it. They will claim that it was something that was just about to break. Even if you take them to court you will have a tough job proving it was them that broke it. hopefully its not too expensive to fix.

Take it to a dealership and get it checked out, your car still under warranty?

This happened to me too. Except I couldn't get into reverse also. The dealership said my synchros went bad and I needed a new tranny. I got it covered under my extended warrenty at 70k miles.

Customers almost ALWAYS win small claims suits against shops, threaten em with that and they will probably fix it. Well big corps like a firestone/pep boys/ good year. Mom and pop shops may be a different story. The only problem is you should have went back immediatlely. Waiting and then going back looks fishy, why didn't you stop the guy when he immediatly started to drive ur car and showed he couldn't drive stick?

I was the last customer out of the building and I drove down the block and RIGHT back...I called them 3 times and even called the 1800 # and made a claim within 15 min of leaving the store. I'm sure the guy could drive a 5 speed neon, but a 6 speed Z is a different story.
