Default Nismo PS Cooler vs Homemade

Hey guys,

I'm concidering installing a PS cooler since during hot autoX days and my 275 tires up front cause the PS to cavitate during runs. I found that nismo makes one for 160. I was wondering if anyone has compared that to a standard cooler from jegs or autozone. I can build one for about 70 bucks.

Unless you're balling. In which case- don't forget to get the Nismo Oil Cooler for a measly $1250.00

I read your post earlier JasonZ, and thats what I was basing my homemade one on. Did changing it fix the problems you had drifting?

I'm eyeing this one..
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Its 4 pass as compared to double pass, and it has bigger piping for reduced pressure loss and higher flow rates

YES! Never had an issue after that puppy was installed!

it seems like a lot of work because i wanted to keep it at the factory location with the aluminum.

You could simply just mount it on the radiator core. for an easy install. or hang it off the aluminum bumper brace.

it all depends on which "CORE" you buy as a ps cooler and how the mounts are on it. all are different. after figuring out where you want it, its as simple as extending the existing hoses......or replacing the existing hose's with longer ones.

see, you have to remember, the Z powersteering is already being cooled...but the stock cooler when under load (autox'n, drifting) is pushing the ps fluid too fast through that short "U" shape that it doesn't actually pass through the finned area long enough to actually cool......

The "cooling core" i used has a few runs back and forth of "U" that i just had to add a little bit more power steering fluid.

ya, that one should work great....its only 8x5 (surface area to catch air for cooling).

mine was more like 12x8, but i think anything over the super small oem one and 2 passes will do the job.......from everyone i know or have read with one, that solves the problem for sure...

yeah i understand that, but you gained a little surface area, but you still only have 1 pass....let us know how it works? if it solves the problem?

So by plumming into the first one, you essentially have two ps coolers....swweet! good job.....nothing wrong with that...

Cool... Thanks for the help. I'll update once I do my first autoX!

Do you know if anyone ever upgraded the PS lines to steel braided lines with AN fittings?

^I didn't have a problem to start with. I was doing so many cooling mods, it just seemed like a good time to replace (Raditor, Tranny, Oil, Fans, Radiator Hoses, Nismo Thermostat, coolant flush, etc). I haven't noticed any problems during autocross before/after the cooler.

I'm also running 275 all around on light-ish 18s.

you could, it would give a nice look, where its visible if at all, but i don't think its really needed at all...not really high temps there to have much line expansion, plus doing that would mean then buying a "core" that accepted AN threading, those get more pricey over the $25-30 units were using here....not really a need i would say....

For heavy tracking , the $30 cooler isn't enough, its the same as the NISMO, so that one won't be enought either. Soon i will upgrade again to a bigger cooler.

... back to the drawing board. I need to do more research on these units. None of the companies release any overall heat transfer coefficients for their heat exchangers so its hard to compare. Im gonna call up some of these companies. I know my oil enters at 210F and I want them to exit at 130. I'll find an appropriate size and update this thread as I get more information.
