Default just reset ECU on my NISMO Z..... :(

my mods: (all nismo)

cams, i/h/e, flywheel

well, its been a couple of weeks since i had those mods put in, and i gradually noticed a lost in the pickup of my car. i've always thought that the ECU doesnt really negate mods, but now i have to raise an eyebrow.

this morning i reset the ecu to see what would happen. well, the car instantly felt very noticeably stronger. now i'm kinda leaning towards the camp of "ecu cuts mod power" .....dang, now i have to consider maybe TS ecu or wait for nismo to put out an ecu (if they even will )

anyways, just thought i'd share my impressions. btw, anybody know how often you'd have to reset the ecu? i heard its every 2 weeks or so....oh well.

Or you can get Nismo ECU which has a non-adjusting fuel map

This is the same experience I'm having with the Borla. I would say it felt about 15 horses stronger initially. But after two weeks the power began to fall off. So much so in fact, the car now does not run as strong as it did before the Borla. In other words, I lost power. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed.

Timing is critical. Use a stop watch or some other timing device to help you get it right.

I tried it several times using my watch, the cel just refuses to flash.

I think this all comes down to getting used to the power. It's purely psychological. If you expect a result, you will get it.

Case in point; 2 track days back, my Z got really hot while flogging it in 102 degree plus heat. I actually worried that getting it so hot, I may have hurt it. As soon as I started to worry about it, the car felt slower to me. I was a bit freaked, it felt slower everywhere. After about 2 days of that, I got the Gtech out and you know what? The car was just as fast as it's always been. And immediately upon finding that out, the car didn't feel slow any more.

It's all in your head!

OK. I see. I'll just expect more power and I'll get it.

Can't you disconnect the battery overnight and the ECU resets...? Maybe I just read another thread wrong or something

No, you'll just think you feel it when in fact, it's not there. Placebo affect.

It's not like there's not any truth to what you say, but I'm somewhat aware of my own BS. Trust me, this is not in my head. Since the Borla my gas mileage is down an indicated 4MPG; my throttle response is not NEARLY as crisp; midrange power is and feels flat; the engine doesn't feel particular eager to rev; the sparkplugs indicate my Z is running leaner.

The first couple of weeks with the Borla was great. Under full throttle, in second gear, the car wanted to break loose! It won't break loose now that's for sure.

The engine felt and pulled better before the Borla.

Besides the gas mileage # (where you could actually be driving the car harder to make up for the perceived performance loss), you don't have any hard evidence to quantify your butt dyno's feelings. Get a G-Tech and do some 3rd gear runs and just measure peak accellerative G force. Then go back to stock and do the same thing.

raceboy, I hope that you are right. I really hate to think that we lose gains, cuase it wouldn't make sense for a manufactor. Nissan released nismo to better their performance with aftermarket parts. Just doesn't make sense for them to take away power from the mods that they sell.

Now, I have heard of people losing gains with smaller mods, but I have always thought that those gains were so small that they could easily go unnoticed.

He is right, I was searching on some jdm websites and found a place that sells the Nismo ECU for the Nismo cams. It says the ecu from Nismo is highly recommended.

not sure

1. if it will work - Japan does not have OBDII, we do, so wiring may be difference

2. definately tuned for higher octane gas than we get here....
