350z motor gurus Help!! (Cam timing?)

Default 350z motor gurus Help!! (Cam timing?)

can someone tell me or guide me to a place that describes cam chain timing? I have searched, so dont give me the search bs. A friend of mine just built his bottom end and had his heads check by napa. He is in the progress of putting the cam chains back on each side. The manuel is very vague when showing how to set the timing chain on the cam gears. Any help would be great!

That's for a G35, but I'm sure there is a similar page in the 350z Service Manual...

Thanks for the pic! Its the same one i have! What i was getting to was that the manuel does not tell u wich marks to use. We find out which one it was. On the cam timing the left side needs to be aligned with the punched (circle marks) and the right side needs to be aligned with the punched (Oval marks) as if you are standing in front of the car looking at the pullies. Reason why is the manuel just say punched and it does not tell you that it has two sets of punch marks on the cam gears.

The manual details this on subsequent pages. When you set #1 piston at TDC, and the cams all the valves closed on #1, it will be obvious as to which marks to use. Ovals or Circles.

yup........it is fully detailed in the service manual as to what goes where. the manual could be written better, but it is all there. also, make sure the cams are position such as they would be at TDC of the compression stroke, not TDC of the exhaust stroke. I am speaking of the #1 cylinder. the nose of the cam lobes will be aiming towards eachother if everything is correct.

Once you get everything in place, take a look at it, and it all makes sense....and you'll wonder why it seemed confusing at first.
