snip n pasted..

drive around town...

Time Gear Rpm Oil Temp (*C)
1:00-5:00 3 3500 70
5:01-15:00 6 2000 80
15:01-40:00 6 3000 90

(Started the altitude climb ~35:00)

40:01-45:00 5 4000 95
45:01-47:00 4 5000 100
47:01-60:00 6 3000 90
60:01-65:00 Neutral 600 88

some more interesting temps on my 330 mile / 4.5 hour trip to norcal tonite.
i saw it all.. high temp (101F all the way to 61F ambient temp!! Desert->Coastal)

Time RPM GEAR OIL TEMP (C) AMBIENT TEMP (F)
0:00-0:45 3500 6 95 101

(windy roads up to bakersfield)

0:45-1:30 3500 6 100 101

(long straight aways on HWY 5, with intermittent down shifts to 4th to pass cars at 100mph+)

1:30-3:00 3000 6 95 86

(after stopping for an hour for dinner, continued on HWY 5)

3:01-4:00 2500 6 85 64

(rapid temperature drop after the sunset, now fairly close to sea level ~500ft ASL, and very cold outside

4:00-4:15 4000 4 88 61

(decided to rev around town hard to see if the cooler temps would mean anything for the oil, not really)

4:15- 4:30 3500 3 85 60

(slow drive on windy mtn road)

4:30-4:34 600 Neutral 85 61
(cooling down)

looks like average operating temperature is around the 85-90C mark, only when running the car hard did i get it to go past 100C.

Default What about existinjg oil cooler?

What if you were to tap into the existing oil cooler lines. My 04 G35s has one, and according to the Z service manual it does too. They are hard lines connected using rubber hoses. You may be able to get the hard lines flared on two of the ends and tap in with a nice stainless line setup there. this would save in needing another/different sandwich plate. just a thought:-)

If you're talking about the two hardlines pointed to in the picture below, those are water lines for coolant to flow through. It is a very rudimentary oil cooler that nissan incorporated. Unfortunately, no oil flows through those lines to tap into for the oil cooler.

Chevy got rid of the oil cooler on the C5 by changing to Mobil 1.

Thanks for straightening that out. i mistook the text in the manual (probably read to fast, lol). I took it as those were oil lines routed through cooling system, rather than cooling lines routed through oil system.

Thanks again:-)

I think having an oil cooler on your car is a MUST. The cooler you can keep your car and fluids you have, the better off you're going to be. A lot of the luxury cars put oil coolers and tranny coolers on their cars and hopefully they'll become an industry standard.

My objective is not to stay below the max safe oil temp. It is to keep the oil temps within the optimal temp range of 180-200 F. I don't have to worry about running my engine at WOT in the hot Arizona sun. (where I'll be next year)
Nice to have another Colorado resident move to AZ.

With winter rolling around, I think I wont be interested in an oil cooler and tranny cooler for at least 5 months. I would certainly add these parts if I ever get a SC or TT.
