Default timing chain help

ive got an 03 auto touring.so my timing chain is gone.i went o dealer and they told me its not covered by my really expensive extended warranty.i went to my mechanic and he told me he wants 865 in labor and i have to get the chain myself. when doing this job,is the chain the only thing i need or is their some other items that i should get to do the job.whats up with the 865 he wants, that sounds very high to me,but then again i know nothing of mechanical costs..am i getting ripped?what do you guys think is a reasonable price for to get this done..any suggestions or help you guys can offer is helpful..

There's three chains in the VQ. The primary chain that runs the crank with the intake cams and the secondary chains that run the intake cams with the exhaust cams. To do the job, standard MOD guide calls for 7.5 hours for all three chains, so price will vary depending on shop rate.

Might as well do the water pump while you're in there...how many miles are on your Z and did the dealer say why your timing chain is "gone" ? Did it break? Excessive slack?

You're probably looking at over $300 in parts for the three chains and new chain guides.

avg labor rate is right around 100 bucks an hr depending where you live. Your car doesnt start and they said its a timing chain? Wouldnt that mean you need an engine, since this is an interference engine? I think your getting raped sir.

They don't necessarily have to open up the engine, there are two plates on the front timing cover they can remove and look through to check the chain (one plate at the tensioner and another at the waterpump). But 0jiggy0 is correct, VQ35 is an interference engine; meaning if your chain is broken your pistons would hit your valves. You would need a valve job or a new engine.

Is your car still at the stealership? If so, I would go there and have their mechanic show you your chain is broken on your car.

thats what im gonna do cause when i went to dealer to pickup car i asked the tech if he opened it up or looked behind those plates and he said,i dont have to ,i know its broke..???what the fukc is he talking about? maybe hes a phsychic mechanic.i brought it to a repair shop near my house and he said exactly what you guys are saying .so i got to wait till monday and see what he can do for me,as far as telling me exactly whats going on .im just worried that hes never done a timing chain on a z before.its either let the dealer rape me or take a chance on this local guy.he saysno problem,he can do it...keeping fingers crossed.
