Default Oil stick reading

You guys don't know how much i'm hating that oil mesuring stick on the 350z. I just changed the oil for the first time, I dripped all the oil for a long time, remove the filter and open the measuring stick (however i did not open the oil cap until the filter and plug were tided in place. I would like to believe i put 4.5 quaters. The 5 quarts container or valvoline SAE 5W-30. has lines on the sides for liters and quarts. The actual container with some oil left, it's between the bottom of the container and the first line. I checked the oil stick and it's all cover withoil beyond the H level. I can not get a good reading since it takes a lot of turning and bending to get it out or to put the stick back on place. What can i do to check the appropiate level of oil. Could it be posible that I over filled with oil???

Dry it off, stick it back in then pull it out, when looking at it, hold it at an angle and tilt it under a light, at some point you'll see where the "wet" stops. If you still can't see it lay it down on a white paper towel and look at where the towel gets wet.

Yes its a PITA, the only good thing is after a week or so of driving the oil will have enough color to easily see on the dip stick.

You need to run the engine for awhile after oil and filter change. You can't measure properly until the filter has absorbed however much it is going to absorb.

Let it sit over night and then check it. (cold engine)

Default Unknown quatity of oil

Since it could be + or - 4.5 quarters, what happens if there is to much or not enough. For sure there is like half of a quarter on that 5 quarter container, unless valvoline uses Imperial quaters and i usually put to much since i put 4.5 quarters of that container

The only way I can get an accurate reading is to drain the oil and then measure it. The way an HKS supercharger is wedged in there does not help at all either.

Will there actually be any kinda damage to the seals, rings or gaskets IF you do overfill?? Just a doubt, dudes.

Is this about reading the dip stick, or when to check the dip stick for a correct level?

Get the car up to temperature, park on a level surface and let the car sit for a few minutes then check. I like mine to be near the top of the markers. I always put in slightly less then what's needed and add more if needed. I over filled a car once and had to jack it up and slowly let oil out the drain plug, it was a PITA, so I'll never over fill again.

I bought an 03 Z in march with 48k on it,switched to synthetic, now i have been hearing a lifter knock type of sound when i cold start it in the morning and the other day the oil psi gauge was down to 0 and the oil light on the dash came on,i checked the stick and there was nothing on it!! almost bone dry, anyone know what the prob could be? it doesnt leak a drop and the mileage is too low for problems, but i dont know how it was treated by the previous owner, maybe they beat the **** out of it for the the first 48k?
