Question turbo or replace transmission?

I've recently gotten the 3rd gear grind. My car is out of warranty. The price of the Powerlab ST kit is affordable for me right now. I have two options, I can buy the turbo w/install with the price that it is now and wait till next year to replace the transmission. Or I can replace the transmission now and risk having the Powerlab ST kit at a higher price next year.

Which option should I choose? I am thinking of going with the turbo and I can live with the transmission for now, until the 3rd gear is gone.

Opinions?

I'd replace the transmission. It might not be the answer you want but if third gear can't handle the power you're at now then it's gonna hurt when it's pushing 400whp... Just my $.02 -Chris-

Definitely turbo. Transmissions are way overrated.

Yeah, I'm thinking of just taking my transmission out all together. The weight reduction should really help in the 1/4. My TT kit is all I need.

Please take this advice. Just because you have the money for the kit and install doesnt mean that all its gonna cost to get it up and running. Research fi section its a much more costly project than that. Worst thing that could happen is your car is gonna stay down a lot longer than you anticipate till you get your hands on more money and it sounds like its your dd. Fix the tranny and save up some more money

This could quite possibly be the new stupidest (is that a word) topic ever on my350z.

common sense says fix the transmission first

greedy child says get the turbo

sounds like if you got the turbo you wouldn't have the money to get it installed and tuned properly, and if anything went wrong, you wouldn't have the money to fix it?

After sleeping on it and rethinking the whole idea, I do also find this topic a little retarded. This is true that it's my DD. I have more than enough funds to support the turbo and it's possible problems. I do have the greedy child in me that wants to go faster. But the only reason why I ask this question is because I wanted to take advantage of the price of the kit. Since winter is coming up in a few months, I will be storing the Z. So, possibly next year around jan or feb, I could replace the transmission then.

But for now I think it would be logical to replace the transmission. I was also thinking that I would not be able to get a proper tune if my 3rd gear were shot, correct?

i think you pretty much answered your own question. turbos are typically put into vehicles with trannys that work

Get the trans fixed... My trans had the 3rd gear grind too, I installed my TT kit and then within a couple weeks, I blew it all together. Fortunately I had another trans already on the way and ability to to all the work myself, so I was down for 3 days.

Point is, the guys are right, just because the PL kit is xxx amount of dollars, its going to be significantly more for all the additional things, heat wrap, gauges, clutch, tune, etc...

Fix the trans, save enough mula for the kit, and then add another 1500 or so for misc. things you'll be needing to do.

Read up on the FI section, lots of great information.

Get the turbo kit. You just have a bad syncro. Our transmissions are cheap to replace and will hold up with bad syncros for a good bit of time.
