Default Buy a Used Engine or Rebuild Engine

Hey guys, my engine is sooo f'd up i dont even wanna start. I have to change my oil every 950 miles but anyway. Should i buy a used engine or should i just rebuild it? I am looking to install a single turbo kit in the future, so what would be needed for my engine in order to make this happen? Please feel free to give me advice. Thanks

First off do you know exactly whats wrong with your current motor. yeah some might say pull that motor and rebuild it with stronger internals. To me it makes more sense to buy a used motor build it at your leisure meanwhile you can drive the car while this is being done, once the new motor is done being built you can just drop it in. You can either sell the original motor or use it for parts afterwards .

DO you have emissions in RI? With that much oil burning you cats will be fouled in no time. Sounds like a great reason to get tp's.

Your question is one that seems totally dependant on time and money. If you'tr going FI, it would make more sense to build the shortblock using your current engine. Forged pistons, rods and ARP hardware, along with some crank work are a minimum, along with the ST kit install itself.

That'll take time and an experienced shop to complete. Can you do without your car for several weeks or months? Do you have the $$$ to actually PAY for the entire job? I'd budget from $5-7K (or more, depending on how badly your engine is damaged) at a minimum.

If you don't have the time and money, time to buy a VQ out of a junked Z. Be sure to get the same version VQ engine to avoid CELs.

Just keep changing/adding oil until you are going to pull the trigger on an F/I system - that's what I do.

Depends on your power goals when you go FI. More than 400 safely=built block

Re-build your motor for your turbo set-up.

ok so im thinking about just buying a cossworth short block instead of rebuilding or buying a used one and rebuilding + labor costs. You guys think i can just use the stock heads with the cossworth short block or i would absolutely HAVE to buy the cossworth heads as well? Let me know, thanks

THanks man, those were helpful. So what would be the best performance Long Block to purchase or Best Short Block? I have found that importpartspro.com has different stages for Short Blocks, Heads, or Long Blocks. Any one else have and info

Cosworth is well known in the racing world for producing great engines. If you've got the coin, it's hard to recommend anybody else. But that is the high end route and there are other shops that produce built shortblocks as you've seen.

The questions remain: how do you want to go? How DEEP are your pockets?

not that deep. if i were to get cossworth longblock, it would cost me 12 gran plus about 7 gran for twin turbo. But for a stage 3 long block from importpro, it would only cost 6,600 and i could afford a twin turbo for a total of 13 gran. Thats what im thinking about

Do you have the knowledge, tools and skills to change the engine yourself? That will save plenty of money before you take it to a pro to be tuned.

Well his other question reguarding using stock heads on a built shortblock wasnt answered and i would also like to know the answer. Seems like me and you are the only ones who have heard of IPP built engines cause i have never heard anyone talk about them or recommend then and they been building VQ's and other nissan engines for ten years.

By "knowledge", does this mean you've changed out a VQ or other Nissan motor? But if you don't have any tools (or a space to work out of), it may be a moot question anyway. Do you have a shop picked out to do the swap and tune? If so, the costs (time and money) should be defined up front.

As for the shortblock question, OEM heads should work with a rebuilt shortblock. Any reputable vendor would be starting with a used VQ35DE block and rebuilding it from there. Of course, to work with a lowered compression ratio the turbo application will have to be installed and tuned. Confirm that with the vendor if you have any questions.
