It is recommended and they are dirt cheap from Nissan.

But chances are it will not leak if not replaced.

you dont have to replace it everytime but its a good thing to do. The next time you go to the dealership just buy a few or go to you local auto part store and buy one

Do you screw it in by hand?

I've reused mine several times, and just replace it when I remember... No problems thus far.

just buy like 100 of them at once for $30, and replace them every time. takes a few seconds to swap them off of the drain plug. i replace mine every time, and u'd probably be alright if you don't. but $30 is a pretty cheap re-assurance investment over the life of the car.

Yup, screw off screw on.

I while back, when I first changed my oil, I didn't use a washer and leaked about the size of 2 quarters after driving. Not extremely bad, but annoying. So, now, I put on a new one every oil change just to be on the safe side.

Havn't replaced mine yet in the past 60k, never replaced them on past cars, wasn't recomended to change it in past cars. Can't see why there would be a change.

They are perfectly fine to reuse. Just visually check to see that its in one piece.

You should replace them. That being said, I never have, and have never had the slightest bit of a leak.

My dealer doesnt even have them to sell : / wtf? If you use 28-30ft lbs like youre supposed to, they wont deform enough to need replacement that often. I buy them 10 at a time and replace them every 4-5th change.

One of our crappier local dealers had some available.. for like a $1 of pop. Wtf? Anyway, they only said they had some because they had some leaks... Leaks? I asked them if they were using air tools on the drain plugs, which of course they were, insisting they had torque sockets that would prevent over torque. Ummmm, yeah.. they were destroying those crush washers, but you can't tell those guys anything.

+1 Always went to the stealership with the intentions to pay, always was just given a bunch for free.

Why not change it? Don't be cheap!

Or, you could put in a Fumoto valve and never worry about it again. Flipping a lever is so much better than removing a plug, it's worth every penny.

No offense, but do you change your oil everyday? Why in the world would you want to make it that easy to drain your oil?? That seems like a huge risk to take just because someone wants to save the 30 seconds or less it takes to remove the plug. You already have to remove a million 10mm screws to pull off the plastic cover to get to your drian plug. What's one more??

IMO a drain is about the dumbest thing you could do! There's a reason no cars come with this option. Could you imagine if it was to come open while you are driving?!?!?!
