I read the OC thread a couple times and it was mentioned that I should follow Nissans break in procedure for the motor, I also did a search on a couple of topics for this and didn't come up with anything good. So I was wondering what experiences people have had with the replacement motors and if they followed the Nissan procedure exactly as stated or if they did something different.

I plan on getting a UOA for the new motor, but was wondering about a couple things.

How soon to replace break in oil?
How often to replace oil in first 5k, 10k miles?
Things I should look out for.
Also since the motor has been replaced should I bug NNA about a buy back so I can get the 4500 bucks or whatever they are offering.

I've read a couple do it in the first 1000 miles then again at 3000.

honestly there is a lot of opinions on this subject. There was a study done on motorcycles and they found if you drive it like you stole it that the piston rings and things had a better seal. When they took out the pistons to come pare hard break-en riding and regular break in, the ones with the drive it like its hard were better looking. You should seen this with the google search that is how i found that out a while back...(less than a year).

 

New car - new motor - same difference. I follow recommendations from Nissan but that's just me.

 

^^This. I've actually been doing research like you, and it seems the best way to do it is this method. However the initial 20 miles are the most important and I've read that the dealership drives it for those 20 miles.


Edit: Wait, I just realized you mentioned a buyback of sorts, what's the story with that? I haven't read anything about it.

 

This has been my experience. I say follow the factory reqs but DRIVE the car. I.E. rev the thing to the limit and push it (up to the factory recommendation of course). Worked great on my HR.

 

I drove like Dale Earnhardt out of the dealership all the way home after they put in my new longblock. My car dynoed 282Hp also. 45k on the engine now and all 5 quarts come out on oil changes.
