rear diff questions
so how standard are the Nissan R200 diff's? will a r200 differential from a 300z or a 240sx fit in a 350z? I am used to working on solid axle rear ends like the ford 8.8, there are just a few variables and not much changes besides 28 or 31 spline, and pretty much any year 8.8 will be interchangeable if the spline count is the same..
I have read that R200 uses different ring gear bolts, either 10mm or 12mm.. what size is the 350z? 300z?
Another thing I have not been able to find info on are what spline the 350z half shafts are. I know the base shafts are different than the other models, but in what way? Also, how are the half shafts held in to the differential?
Why I am asking.. will something like this Helical diff fit?

Seems to me from your "why" is that your wanting an gear lsd...
Quaiffe is what you want.
the R200 in the Z is a "variant" of the previous years, housing even changes, but they stilll call it an R200, diff cover changes from two studs to one on the 350z.
Ratio and axle sizes as well........
Quaiffe install:

Thanks for the info, I know the quaife is just what I am looking for.. just not the price.
Just thought there might be other options out there if the internals were shared between some other nissan models...

I dont think Nissan would go to the work to change things like bearing sizes or positions, pinion or ring gear positions, or overall dimensions... the only thing I am not sure of are if the axle shafts are interchangeable.
From this info the the diff is the same as the 97-98 240, but I am not sure if the axle shafts will work...

and if the OBX helical differential (which is the same design as the Quaife, just -$800) will fit, that would be a good bit of info! I might try buying one and experimenting a bit...

because they are 2 completely different units, from 2 incompatible cars
"R200" is a generic term - lots of cars use R200 diffs. 350Z's need their own type, that is only shared, to the best of my knowledge, with the G35 and 370Z/G37. Earlier Nissans ring/pinion, and differentials are not compatible at all, they have totally different dimensions.

240sx diffs shown here:
axle shafts: no speed sensor rings. 240s dont have ABS!!!
Axle bolt pattern is 6 bolts on the axle half shafts - ie, like the Q45, but still no rings for speed sensor.
diff spline diameter is different
rear diff cover is 2 stud - that can be changed but still
ring and pinion is different, dimensions, etc...
front diff ear holes are differnt loctions too
input flange is more forward on the 240.
its an R200 variant is what i would best describe it....its the same R200 housing, but everything changes...

1. "IF"
the ring gear from a 350z, will fit on that ebay diff?!??!
and
2. "IF" the Q45 axles which fit that ebay diff (with sensors) will work with the Z sensors, ie same size, etc
and
3. "IF"
the 6 bolt pattern from the Q45 axles match the Z 6 bolt axles with out adapter plates or the need for custom bolt pattern axles.
then, maybe you can do it..
"OR"
1.1 "IF" the Z ring gear doesnt fit the ebay diff, then using the 95-98 4.083 gear pinion and input flange would call for a custom LONGER drive shaft as the input flange is both smaller and would have a gap, maybe not a new axle but some kind of custom gap filling plate to match the bolt pattern. provided item 2 and 3 would work.
either way!! your spending time and money...pointless really...
