Power steering loss while passing?
On the way to take a final yesterday i passed a car (i think i hit 80-85 in 4th) and the power steering died... a red light came on the dash directly underneath where the tps light is. It went off about the time i saw red and i regained power steering... any thoughts, other than pass in 5th next time?

your gear selection had nothing to do with it
if the pump regained its power assist, the belt is intact (i'd check it anyway for cracks, wear just to be safe). You could be really, really low on fluid (indicates a leak), or your pump could be on its way out. Either way, it needs attention

What makes you think the power steering quit working? I doubt you were trying to turn the wheel more than a few degrees at 85mph, but anything is possible when you're already driving like an idiot.
In Georgia, it's illegal to go over the speed limit to pass someone, and going 85mph puts you in the "super-speeder" category, which carries some hefty fees in addition to the already-high speeding fine.

I would think anyone with brain can tell when their power steering completely goes out...it's not a subtle feeling
when you're changing the belt, you may want to inspect the pulley and see if there is any play or wobble to it

you are correct sir, it wasnt a sharp curve... however it was enough to make me sh*t myself when the steering wheel wouldn't move... but seeing as your in that commie state of Georgia I guess you don't understand how people in normal states drive.

Did they say which one was worn out? I'm thinking it was the P/S alt belt, and the belt just slipped, giving you no power steering and the battery light (red light you said) Then you got it all back when you shifted (no torque, belt grabbed)
