Default VQ35DE Flywheels and Rotational Mass Discussion

I have been trying to find information in lightweight flywheels as I will be changing my clutch/flywheel in the coming weeks and I couldn't seem to find a good guide or list of information on each flywheel or the effects of such on our cars so I am writing one.

First a few things on how rotational mass works and the effects of that mass on various engine parts.

In summary, because you measure the power gained during accelaration in terms of power over time the lightest may not be the best. You need to find the correct flywheel for your application. Personally based on my reasearch I think that in a 1/4 mile situation the effect ranges from detrimental (Less stored mass for launch) to minimal(Lots of time, very little HP saved). In an autoX situation you may notice more of a difference because there are more short bursts of accellaration. It would also change greatly if you had some 8k RPM revving monster because the formula is also based on RPM.

Also, the lighter a flywheel is the more it may tear up your vehicle over time as the weight of a flywheel absorbs the power pulses from the engine. It can also mean harder stop - start situations in traffic by increasing revvs to get the vehicle moving. As well as slightly faster shifts to keep the car matched in revs to the transmission. (From my experience and testing the 06z drops to perfect revvs for the next gear after what seems like an eternity anyway). From what I gather combining a good dampening crankshaft pulley with a lightweight flywheel can reduce the negative effects.

That being said, I can't test every flywheel here if anyone has real world time slips, dyno result or other experience (That flywheel exploded, warped or is loud as hell) in a before and after situation (Not a butt dyno result) it would help others later on if we could add it to this thread.

OK cool but what have we learned from this that we have not discussed in the past 8 years? What is new here?

The ability to find it all in on spot without reading 200 posts or search the web for 3 days. If we want people to ask fewer repetitive questions, I figure making the information easier to find is a good way to start.
