Hey im new here I have a boosted 04 z base open diff and I hate it needs LSD was thinking about a factory LSD to just bolt it on, would an auto diff work, what is my stock gearing and what gearing would be good for boost like highway pulls we have a 1/8th mile track where I live but don't want the gearing to mess with higher speeds? LMk what you think thanks
With 300, 400 or 500 horsepower OEM gearing will be fine. Why would it not be? Seldom will you reach peak horsepower at 6,500 RPM or wherever.
Drag racing is a different story. If you are serious about racing, do it. We can make recommendations later.

The OEM VLSD is slightly better than an open diff and worthless in a straight line. If your happy with your stock gearing, stick with it , just upgrade to a nice LSD. I suggest OS Giken Super Lock, available thru Fontana Nissan, THmotorsports or Z1 Auto . All great people to do business with.

Really don't want to spend over 1000 on a diff what's a good decent priced diff? Oem LSD has to be way better than an open diff and oem diffs can be had for around 400 complete bolt in

I was considering the quaife at first but as I have been reading around I have been finding that it is maybe not the best. In simple terms I guess it doesn't lock up as nice as some as the others that are only a couple hundred more.
I am still trying to find out more about kaaz or carbonetics.
VLSD is 10% if that much, better than an open diff. With stock HP you can fry it in a few trackdays, with HP it will just fry even faster.

So you have $10+ in you boost system and want to be cheap as hell when it come to trying to put the power to the ground. I guess no there are no braggiing rights for traction.

not tryin to be an *** dude but if you wanted stuff to be cheap shoulda went with a different platform, stuff for this one is expensive. 1k is the starting price for diffs, you can try a stock one but people will tell you i told you so when you trash it and are unhappy.
The various aftermarket LSD's lock up to 100% - some allow adjustment to tailor it to your own needs/wants/suspension/driving style. Other units like the Quaife, are not really an "LSD" at all, but are gear driven, helical differentials, that also lock 100%.
An auto differential by itself is not compatible with a manual ring and pinion, and vice versa. To install the 3.3 final drive gears, you need an LSD designed for an automatic car. Quaife and Cusco offer these. There may be another I am forgetting as well.
Sure, you can spend however much money on a used pumpkin, and think you're making a huge difference. You're making a difference, yes, but it's not tremendous. The aftermarket differential, while not a beautiful piece in the traditional sense, is the one mod everyone does, and everyone wishes wasn't so expensive, but not a single person every complains about the performance. The way it transforms the car is simply unmatched among any other modification you can do at it's price point.

73K HARD a$$ miles on my OEm diffs (3.5 and 3.3FD). It has never peg legged at the track. Not saying its the greatest or that it isnt marginal at best, but it still lays down 2 even patches of rubber when I want to spin em in any gear. Not bad for 27% lock up
Having said all that a good diff is something Ive wanted to add for a while. I drove a Carbontics diff and wasnt impressed in the least bit

drag strip - whatever differential will support your intended tire choice. The better your tire, the more difference the differential will make
the biggest difference a true differential will make is during road race use/fast road/mountain roads, (or drift use, though I have no experience there) etc. There are design differences among certain LSD's that let them work better for drag race use as well, but these tend to be different types of units vs the ones you use for road racing
