Default little problem w installing a gauge

i finished installing prosport water temp. gauge. Everything works perfectly other than the LED gauge light is on even when the engine is off.
This is how i did it.
There are two wires (black and white) from the temp sender. I hooked up the black wire to ground, and white wire is connected to green wire from the gauge. (followed instruction)
Red wire from the gauge was connected to the positive side of battery.
Black wire from the gauge was grounded.
White wires was not used since i only wanted amber LED.
Orange wire was connected to the blue/white wire from the back of the ignition key hole (the blue/white wire is really thick comparing to 24 gauge wires that i used). The instruction said to connect orange wire to headlight switch, however.
The LED won't turn off even when key is not in ignition.
So i tried connecting the white wire from the gauge to the ignition wire instead of the orange. The result was the same other than this time the LED is white instead of amber.
Did i mess up on hooking up wires?

I attached pics of the harness i took off from the ignition and the ignition wire

should I connect the red wire (hooked up to battery now) to ignition wire and leave orange and white wires unconnected?
since orange wire is used to change led lights, and I want amber only, I'm assuming it's ok to keep it disconnected

right now, orange is hooked up to ignition wire.
the instructions says red should be hooked up to 12v accessory power. idk if it can be connected to ignition.
