Ive installed pullies in the past so I figured this was not exaclty a challenge....... I was wrong. Read the instructions on this forum and talked to a couple people and still cant get it off. Here is how I have it setup.
Car is jacked up on stands. Belts are off. I have a 12" breaker with a 2.5foot slip on pipe over it. Im turning the pulley LEFTY LOOSEY with someone slamming the brake and it in gear.
Since I do NOT have a lift I can only turn the pully about 1/4+ turn, but even then its not stiff. It springs around 1/4 then springs back. What the heck am I doing wrong. Does it normally spin and spring around like that then go back? Do I just need to turn it more then a 1/4?
Help

The only luck I have ever had with pulleys was with using an air impact gun.
I'm not sure you can get an air impact on the bolt for the Z without tearing a bunch of the front end apart though.
Once you break it loose, it'll go easy, you just need to get it broken loose.

put the belts back on a tighten them up. i had everything on when i used a breaker bar. It help in making it come off. Also make sure you have it in sixth gear and someone is standing on the breaks

I drove my car up onto ramps and removed the pulley from the top of the car pushing the breaker bar toward the passenger side. I simply could not get enough leverage while laying underneath the car. Be sure that you have it in 6th; after a few tries I realized that I had it in reverse by mistake. I left my belts on and didn't have anyone stand on the brakes while I removed the pulley. It definately does require a lot of force to remove it but it can be done with a breaker bar, especially if you're using 2 extra feet of pipe. I'm sure an impact wrench would be a much easy way to go but you might have to remove a lot of extra parts to get it to fit in that tight space. My hands were swolen the next day and stayed sore for about a week after the install
, good luck.

Excellent, thanks everyone for responding. I did not have it in 6th gear first off....secondly I was doing it from the bottom.
Not that I need to use one, but how in the hell are you guys fitting an impact gun in there? There is all of 1.5-2" of play room in front of that pulley! I have tons of air tools but none will fit except my weak 90deg gun.
Let me give it a whirl with all the belts back on it again and from the top. Heck, it may work!

You can't fit an impact gun in there even if you pull the whole radiator and the shroud, at least not my gun, don't waste your time. Been there, done that all for nothing!
Breaker bar from the top, keep trying, it's the only way.

Well, I just used the starter motor.....
With the car on ramps, and a breaker bar on the nut with an extension that went to the ground (resting on plywood for some added safety), I ran the starter motor for about 1/4 second. (Just a blip on the switch) That was plenty to break the nut loose.
No pain, no fuss, and didn't have to pull the radiator.
Removal of the alternator to swap its pulley took 10 times longer than any of the rest of it. All together, including pics and a break for lunch, the whole thing took 3 hours.
Afterward, I was not happy with the length of belts, so I ended up swapping these out several times before I got the lengths that I was happy with.
My dumbass mistake was during one of these belt swaps, I forgot to tighten the idler pulleys back, and ended up losing the A/C idler pulley on the side of the road. After three trips back to the spot, I did find it and the dust covers. It took some grinding and polishing to get all of the road rash out of the thing. Live and learn.....

Have you done this install on the 5AT??
I had to borrow (for free) a special crank holder like a STAR looking tool with teeth to hold the crank from spinning
5 minutes
off is a different story
I think wadd is explaining what I went through pretty good lol, except I took of the radiator and shroud for nothing because I figured I would impact that baby off and it didn't fit.
Breaker bar and leverage and aspirin as needed.

I'll give it one more go before I sell them.
