Default 3.5 to 4.08 gears..

hey guys im thinking aout replacing my stock 3.5 gears to 4.08, i have a riend with 410s in his mustang and his max speed is 120mph, iknow its a totally different car but would mine be around the same as well? im not looking to go 170 mph in my car, i just want a fast car off the line and from a roll, i havea fully built motor on 150 shot, just want different gears.. was checking with anyone if they have 4.08s and what do you think about them, any suggestions? should i go 373s?

Mine are currently being installed, they had to order shims for it yesterday , should be in / done tomorrow. Can't speak first hand about how good they are, but it seems like everyone who gets them for their N/A car loves them.

As far as top speed it does reduce it, I think down to like 136 or 140 mph. There's a whole thread on the forum that talks about it, I'm to lazy to look / link you though.

Would going to 4.08's + a 150 shot be a good idea? I'm not sure which is why I asked I know everyone with turbo's want longer gears to keep building boost.

Sounds noobish I'm just brain dead right now.

yeah but im not going to spray every gear which is why i dont want longer gears, boost is holding through all gears, plus it will get 10xs more expensive to spray every gear lol, im mainly going to spray through 2nd and 3rd. i might change my mind though, i wont know til i run some 1/4 miles and find out.. its all just testing the waters from here on out.. im almost 99% sure ill like the 408s with 150 shot.. i dont think i would get past 140mph with the set up, i mean if i do i guess ill get rid of 408s and go with a 373 or something. like i said, just testing everything for now

Shorter gearing will help when not spraying but with spray it's gonna hold you back especially at the track.

Does your car have a VLSD at least? I think Nitrous with shorter gears might cause for some traction issues. I'd bet it bread 3rd loose no prob which means you'd only be spraying in 5 and 6..... Also, you may want to look at some of the stickies and threads in the Nitrous section.....a 150 shot is quite a bit for our engines. Seems like most people run 100 safely....

Edit: there are 3.7 gears for our car....a bit more expensive I think though.... And on that note if you don't have VLSD at least I believe the 370z's whole diff fits right in to our car.....maybe look into that as well....

okay thanks for the help, im going to look at a 370zs rear and see if they fit right on for sure.. but i will be able to handle 150 shot safely my motor is built for nitrous. im going a different route then low compression twin or single turbo etc, just wanting something different. i still have bigger injectors to buy, fuel pump, osiris, fuel pressure safety switch for nitrous, WOt/RPM switch, safety blow down kit, M/T ET street radials, and then tune my car to e85 lol, i still have a good ways to go but its getting there. ill do a thread on it when i am all done and laso post up dyno sheets and time slips

Nitrous sounds fun.....never had it but I did a decent amount of research on it. Seems like your heading in the right direction....keep us updated with pics too!

well im not doing the nitrous anymore, i am going a different route i already sold all my nitrous set up in 1 day lol, but i have bigger plans for this throughout the winter and through the summer of next year. but for now i am going to get bigger injectors (550), bigger fuel pump (255), osiris uprev, and getting my car tuned by Hal at dynosty for e85 as long as getting my motor FINALLY tuned, since i built it and got it to where i am running on stock ecu to get me by for transportation. but excited to get it all tuned here in the next 3-4 weeks

Nitrous adds a lot of torque and the 4.08 gears act as a torque multiplier. I think a 75-100 shot for top end would be fun with my 4.08s but I would never want to use nitrous early on with this setup. You can pretty much break traction at any point in 1st gear just by stomping the gas.
And as for the mustang having a 120MPH top speed with 4.10s, it's probably because the mustang is a 5 speed and the gearing of the transmission.
