Auto Vs. Manual transmission
#61
and double ****! here i was thinking just because the salesman or owner told me auto i believed it, porsche dosnt even ****ing make a auto ALL its pdk transmissions(what you are referring to as auto's) are dual clutch manuals everything is a manual or dual clutch manual and has been for years. now im severely disappointed in porsche they really have fallen, a dual clutch manual should hold togeather and drive far better then it does. pitiful

So finally you googled it and are educating yourself. Keep it up.
But what took you so long? Didnt google it sooner did you?

Geez, you're kind of bitter for somebody from Hawaii. Surf it off bro, surf it off it'll be ok.
and there we go folks! proof right there you havnt even read anything on them let alone seen one since the NEW one(which isnt even out yet) is the first to be released in automatic, all previous models are manual or dual clutch manuals good job ****. hell now i know you dont even have a Z what a piece of ****.
lemme guess gona make up some stupid **** about how you had it custom built? move on **** troll

actually more like making my plate of dinner its 8pm here the only one googling is your stupid *** ive actually driven them, although i did double check porsche's website to double verify the new gt3 wasnt out yet hence the pdk comment not even being a auto any more smart *** comments or should i link to porsches site directly where it says the pdk is essentially 2 manuals combined into one? **** off you lost and hopefully by this time tomarrow your *** will be banned since you provide NOTHING to this forum
also funny how you talk about taking long to post and take 8-12 minutes between each of my posts

1) im not from hawaii im stationed here 2) this place is a **** hole, only here can someone sell a run down crack house for 500k there is nothing appealing about this island except the 80 degree year round weather which is tarnished by the fact it rains EVERYDAY. everything costs 2-4 times as much here(literally a 125 cf tank of welding gas that i spend $55 bucks for in ohio cost me $190 WITH a military discount) anyone who wants to live her is a fool. especially since the median income is the same as ohio at 50k a year but cost of living is about 4 times higher
i do cars not surfing, especially with the tiger sharks and the great white which where recently sighted close to shore

Oh ok. So I understand the whole dual-clutch setup and everything now, but I still have a couple questions. So in an auto using the "manual" mode, we let the computer know when to shift. But in getting to the "manual" mode we have to put it in D or drive. So at the BASIC level a new GT-R, Maserati Granturismo MC, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Bugatti Veyron, and I guess most recently the new Porsche are all "automatic" because you have to put them into drive be pressing on the brake and not on a clutch? Granted yes, they have double clutch trans, but we tell the computer when we want to shift. So a computer is changing the gears, not the actual driver correct? So at the BASIC level, that makes those transmission essentially automatic?

pressing the brake to put it in gear has nothing to do with the transmission itself, there is a external solenoid that locks the shifter unless the brake pedal is pressed, its a safety feature just like you cant start a manual car without pressing the clutch, you honestly could put the same lockout solenoid on a manual but that is going to make for a very unpleasant driving experience.
automatic vs manual is how power is transferred and how it is shifted. auto's the power is transferred via fluid and shifted by fluid running through a valve body, the manuals and dual clutch manuals dont have that its direct drive gears. and shifted by lever or solenoids.
the automatics the computer dosnt tell it when to shift the valve body does, the computer can modify this SOMEWHAT by adjusting line pressure, even in manual shift mode the auto isnt really shifting when you tell it to, it might seem that way but its not instant certain conditions must still be met. the dual clutch trannys are instant, and the computer controls the shift points 100% there is no valve body. a dual clutch is essentially 2 manual transmissions running on a air shifter(like the unlimited drag cars use) but instead of air they use electricity, they really do share nothing with auto transmissons other then no clutch pedal, and if you wanted to look like at that then dog box trannys dont need to use the clutch to shift.
thats the major different is the automatic the fluid is shifting the dual clutch the computer is shifting with solenoids, and at the most basic level its the drive system fluid vs direct gear driven

These threads make me want to stop going on this forum. I swear in the past 1-2 years the quality of posts have dropped on an exponential level.
Stupidest 2 threads on this forum:
Automatic vs Manual
Hardtop vs Roadster
All the automatic and roadster people just defend the crap out of those choices and the rest of us laugh at them.
An auto roadster is literally the worst Z you can ever buy.
This is a sports car...

MYTH BUSTED.
There is sooo much retarded noob crap in here that needs to be addressed. Jerry and I have our work cut out for us.
what i would suggest would be a manual, but in the long run it is your money go what ever you feel comfortable with.
*story time
i once knew a guy who accidentally downshift to 1st gear with a auto on the highway ...... so he says
people who drive auto seems not to be as smart as people who drive manual ...joke

You guys have a lot to learn.

Just as I said what would happen has happened. AT owners defending the crap out of that shitty choice they made and MT owners laughing at them.
It is funny because in my opinion human nature forces a person to instantly become defensive on something that they already know is wrong. These people know MT is superior yet they defend the crap out of their decision.
Just man up and accept it! Your defensive attitudes are matching your girly cars!

Still proud of your overpriced, non power adding nismo exhaust?

Good for you that you make alot of power. Comparing our cars is apples to oranges.
At the end of the day, the comparison that we are having is between an AT and a MT, both stock or same level of mods.
And realistically, I would rather have my car then yours, because I can never own an AT car. So far all 3 of my cars have been MT and until I can afford a supercar, I will always own a MT.
I have driven high horsepower AT cars and MT cars with less horsepower are much more fun, in my opinion.

Fiy MT is far from dead, c7 vette has a new 7speed mt, porsche has been producing 7 mt's for a while now.
Personally I only want an AT in my daily driver scion tc, anything with a fun factor is mandatory with a manual.
Just driving around town a manual sports car = fun

My daily driver B13 Sentra is a MT, and I got it in MT for several reasons:
1. Only feel comfortable driving a MT
2. Easier to control, especially since I have no ABS. Have a MT saved my *** a couple times in the snow and rain
3. Maintenance is much cheaper. I have learned this from a friend who has owned many beaters. The problem is that once the car is high mileage, there is a good chance that tranny will eventually give out, incurring a huge cost where it makes sense to junk the car most of the time. In a MT car with high mileage, usually the clutch will go instead of the tranny or other parts, which happened in my case. Got a clutch for $70.
4. Goes hand in hand with #3. When I test drove the car, I knew exactly what I was getting into. I felt that the clutch was a little spongy and would eventually go, but the synchros felt great and the whole tranny felt strong. An AT can give out without notice, which my friend had happen to him actually on the way home from picking up one of the beaters (damn Acura tranny!!)
Many people say that AT is much more comfortable and driving a MT is sometimes a PITA, but when you drive it for so long, you don't even realize you are doing it. Countless times I have almost broken my ankle from getting in my fiance's car and going to hit the "clutch" to start the car and end up catching the edge of the dead pedal. It becomes second nature.

Honestly, who gives a **** about the transmission, nobody here should be driving on the street like its a track, and most of the people in here dont track so arguments about control over the car and less weight and better shifting are crap, nobody in here has taken either trans to the limit, except for Terrasmak, Jerryd and Resmarted. For everyday use and occasional track days like most people do, both transmissions will perform. If your car is for looks either one will work, if car is for full track car, manual is needed.
With that being said, drive the damn cars and shutup.

i cant wait to get rid of my 6mt and swap in an auto.
no more grabby clutch, no more boost drop between shifts, no more stress on hwy traffic jams. hello transbrake, big drag radials with no wheel hop
an electronic auto give you paddle manual shifting or normal shift lever shifting all without having to push in the clutch. You are still in control of the shift point when you want to be, and the computer controls them when you just wanna cruise.
How could a manual be better?

I've been driving a manual for about 55 years and love driving manuals. My Z is a manual and my mini-van is automatic. Both do the jobs they were designed to do and I am perfectly driving either. I don't understand why there is so much emotion regarding a person's choice.
