You don't, if you really want to know , pop a stub shaft out. Simple to tell. Either way, you have an open or a viscous open. Both suck, just the VLSD sucks 2% less.

I picked up .3 in the 1/4 mile when switching to a VLSD. Also, no need to pop a stub shaft out. If you do get the pumpkin out, just spin one stub shaft and if the other one spins the same way, its VLSD, if it spins opposite, then OPEN.

I actually don't think that will work with a properly working vlsd. The viscous part makes it a really "soft" limited slip differential. It doesn't actually lock, so I believe it would simulate an open diff when doing that test. The VLSD only really starts locking when there is a very large difference in the individual tires speeds. This is also why a VLSD never has clicking or jerking.

Nope. I've had both open and vlsds out of the car at the same time. An open diff will spin opposite directions, VLSD will spin the same direction.
