Default G37 3.7 vlsd or open? how to tell the difference?

So I just bought a pumpkin from someone with the stub shafts pulled out(but i have them on the side). He says the pumpkin is off his G37 and it is a vlsd. Without taking it all apart, is there any way to confirm that is is a vlsd or open diff? maybe by looking at the stub shafts?

Also, is there any way to confirm its a 3.7fd?

any help appreciated. I searched but couldnt find anything definitive.

so I went out and took some pics. Here is what I got. Seems to be correct looking so far, as these look like 350z vlsd stub shafts.

Thanks Trav! seems to be legit then. I think the viscous coupler in the diff is going, but I got a deal on it so I will be using it anyway for now..

I have a 3.3vlsd as I did a 6mt swap, so this would be quite an improvement for me.

Now I just have to figure out how to get the stub shafts back in without breaking anything! lol

should it be very difficult to get the stub shafts back in?? the short passenger side shaft went in easy, but the longer driver side seems very hard to get back in.. Do I need to hammer it in really hard?

They don't push in by hand, I use a 5 pound dead blow to tap them in.

Ill give it a try today. seemed pretty hard, the other side tapped in nicely with a small hammer.. the long side did not..

I got it to go in.. it was weird; short side went in decently easy, but last inch I had to hammer the crap out of it... Long side was the same... then once it was in, since there are no circlips, the long side now goes in and out very easily. I ordered circlips and will put those in before installing the diff.

So they went in fine without the circlips but needed a little persuasion. Now usig a 5lb mini sledge, cant get them in with the circlips on. Is that normal?? Disnt think it would be THIS hard. And dont want to break anything...

Never had to hammer the crap out of one to get it in...double check everything, you should be able to look into the differential and see which side goes where based on the depth of the circlip groove. Assuming it is still out of the car.

yup its still out of the car. and it slipped in fine without the circlip on. One side always gets stuck for some reason.. i had it together without the clips and the short side was hard to remove but the long side slid in and out easily.. as soon as I put the clip on, the long side slides in til it hits the clip, then won't go further. Even with "persuasion".

I just don't want to mess it up. Pretty sure it looks to be: Short=passenger, long=driver side. Please correct me if that's wrong.

Am I right that the longer side is the driver side? or is that backwards?

So I am not an expert (had an expert shop put in my quaife), but aren't the circlips the only thing that keep the stubs in the differential. I thought they fit in a groove in the gears in the differential. So I am not certain you want to be hammering them with them on. I always figured you put them in and then put the clip on with the back cover removed. But I could be wrong! Also the reason sometimes they go in easy and sometimes not, is I figure they aren't exactly lined up with the gears inside. I figure you would need to rotate the input shaft slightly while wiggling it in, but again, that is just what I would guess based on my understanding of how the thing works.

I can get the long stub shaft to feed in and line up with the teeth, but it stops right at the circlip. I am not 100% sure either as it was taken apart when I got it, but it looks like everyone(in other posts) puts the circlips on the shaft then puts the stub shafts in.

I am also not 100% sure which stub goes in which side but it looks like short=driver side and long=passenger side.

I hope someone who knows more about it can chime in as well before I start going to town on it with a 20lb sledge. If need be, I can open it up and do that. I am just not sure tbh.

nah but if you look through all the diff threads and fs threads its referred to as a complete pumpkin. Never owned a truck in my life and probably never will!

Got it in... Tried what you said rcdash - took clips off and put in the diff first. went nicely into the diff after that.. I think it should be good. will hopefully install this weekend.
