Default Transmission Stuck In 3rd?

Yesterday i was driving up to chicago (im from louisville). I went through a toll about 40 mins outside of the city and when i went to merge back on the expressway my car got stuck in 3rd gear! I pulled over and tried getting it free. The shifter is in nuetral but the trans is stuck in 3rd. I can move the shifter right and left a bit but it wont go in any gears. I drove it to the pep boys because it was the only shop open on Saturday afternoon and burnt the hell out of my clutch doing so. They threw it on the rack and said they would have to drop the transmission and tear it apart to see what was wrong. He said it could be the forks, synchros, or clutch. But they dont do trans work so i would end up paying 500 to have it dropped then have to wait til Monday to have it taken to a trans shop. Now im 5 hours from home and need to be home from work. My plan thus far is to trailer the car home and find a local shop, but trailering it is gonna run me about $750.

So im wondering if anyone has any idea what could be wrong. Maybe itll be something i could get nissan to repair tomorrow and drive home (highly unlikely im sure). And do you think it would be cheaper/quicker to just drop a new transmission in or rebuild mine (it has 47k miles on it)? I'm honestly just screwed anyway i go and of course it happened the same day i was about to drop a few k on a turbo kit...looks like im not gonna be boosted for a long long time :/ thanks in advance for any help!

Sounds like maybe a locking ring has slipped off one of the synchronizers. Gearbox has to come apart for that.

There's also a chance the pin has fallen out of the bottom of the shifter and it's just disconnected from the linkage. That would be a cheap and easy fix.

Ok so called around and found out a new transmission is close to 3k for just the tranny (planning for the worst case scenario). Is there a stronger transmission i could swap into the car since i broke down abd bought a turbo kit?

If its in 3rd and working fine in 3rd and your shifter moves into all the gears but stays in 3rd I would put my money on the linkage... Its only got 47k miles on it wtf...

I would suggest riding dirty in 3rd as far away from pep boys as you can to a Nissan dealership for a proper diagnosis...

You shouldn't have to pay $3K for a new one. One of the vendors here, maybe it's Z1, sells CD009's (the latest version from Nissan) for a lot less than that, IIRC. Do a little searching around.

Im in the process of trailering it back home to louisville to a transmission shop that i trust. Id never let pep boys touch my trans haha. But the transmission is in 3rd and the shifter is in nuetral. It wont go into any gears. It just goes left and then like goesa tad bit right but gets stuck. But i thought i read somewhere that our transmissions arent especially strong. Since i may have to replace it i was seeing if there was a stronger transmission out there (planning on getting around 600 hp with my tt kit). Thanks for all the help i really appreciate it!

Ill definitely check that out! I think the newer versions were stronger than my stock transmission anyway if i remember correctly. Id just prefer buying a new one than getting a used one from a salvage yard if worst comes to worse and i have to replace it.

Ok! So got a brand new transmission (cd00a), clutch, fly wheel, stainless steel clutch line, and blead my clutch. Took the car to dynosty and dropped it off at around 12 testersay and the car was ready today at 8am! It was a lot of work and a pretty expensive job, but it was worth it! The car shifts amazing and the clutch is soo much better!

But i have a question. I saved my old transmission just incase i had any use for it. So, would it be worth it to rebuild it or tear it apart for new gears incase ny new tran5goes bad? I thought the cd009 (my old tranny) was supposed to be pretty tough, but 3rd gear went out after 47k miles. Was told the new transmission (cd00a) was nasically bullet proof and would handle 1100hp easy. But i havent found and info on it on the forums. Any advice? Cannot afford another transmission..
