Default 2004 350Z burns a quart of oil every 1,000 miles

It has 125K miles on it. I have been using 10W30 Royal Purple synthetic oil. What are the possible causes and solutions to stop it from burning oil? It is all factory and has zero performance upgrades.

First, ditch the royal purple.

Secondly, make sure you have no leaks

1qt every 1k miles. 5k mile oil changes at 5qts a change. Sounds like you never have to change your oil. I'm a little jealous

I'm @ a pint every 3k, just turned 100k. Runs like new.

Just keep track of your consumption and top off as necessary.

Good point, I hate SAE, Imperial measure and " thousandths of an inch"! When I look at a nut/bolt that needs to be removed and metric, I know exactly what to pick up.

10mm will get 90% of the bolts and nuts you need off any car, even americans haha

I had Midas check it out.

The valve seals are bad

Low compression

They have to replace the gasket (I can't remember which one)

And replace the piston rings.

In other words the top half of the engine needs to be rebuilt

$2900

Get a 2nd or 3rd opinion, someone who can do most of the work onsite. A brake/muffler shop will most likely sub the work out.
You could also call local salvage yards for a low mileage replacement.

Ouch!

I agree get another opinion from another shop. Also look at running a crud cleaner. Might just be build up especially if its just burning oil but still running good.

Might be the best $10 you ever spent. But its not game over. Like above you could always find a head for relatively cheap from a yard or part out. Maybe do the work your self?

Probably a couple hundred in parts if that. Mostly ganna be labor for a fairly simple job.

With respect. Are we talking oil additive engine cleaner? What do you like?

I went back to Midas to pick some stuff up and they said they talked to another mechanic and the dealer. They were told it only needs the valve covers, pvc valve, and pvc hose replaced. So $1.5K instead of $2.9K.

Nothing specific. Only thing I've ever used personally was sea foam for a friends old POS civic back in high school. Actually helped his car from running like total and complete crap from build up and cheap gas.

Might help OP get a few extra miles out of his motor before going for a full tar down and rebuild if its just build up blocking the seals or internals.

Dude that's at most a weekends work, and a couple hundred in parts..

Youtube is your friend. Do it your self. And I doubt you need new valve covers. Probably just valve cover gasket. Hardly ever do the actual covers need full replacing unless horribly damaged or something catastrophic took place. Not exactly a common wear and tear item.

They replaced my valve covers, valve cover gaskets, plenum gasket, pcv valve and hose, and changed the oil. They mentioned changing the spark plugs but the spark plugs only have 24K miles on them. Can I get away without changing them right now? I noticed my engine is much more responsive now and the oil pressure stays higher longer now as the engine warms up.
