Default 5th and 6th gear CD009 problem

Recently bought this 170k miles 350z with a cd009 trans that I’ve already taken out the car. But I drove the car home no problem with gears 1-4 with gears 5 and 6 pretty much like neutral. Reverse works fine aswell. At idle, I put it in 5th gear and tried seeing if it would move and it rolled forward, but 6th gear I tried and it got stuck. Took the trans out and got it unstuck by messing with 5th and 6th fork, but was wondering if anyone could suspect what the 5th and 6th gear issue could be. Shifter fork or alignment? The trans shifting fine outside the car now after realigning some things I’m considering throwing it back in and seeing if everything is good, but might open it up to check forks and gears first.

Hello,

The 1st thing I would try is re-adjusting your shifter plate. The FSM has a shifter plate adjustment procedure, follow that and hope it solves your issue. It's very rare for a CD009 to have issues with 5th and 6th gear, and since those gears are at the outer limit of the "right" shifter throw, there's a good chance the plate is out of adjustment. The shifter plate sits under the shift boot inside the car and can be easily accessed & adjusted in 10-15 minutes.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply, so I adjusted the plate today and realized the shifter was in opposite direction. That little notch on the **** was facing left instead of on the right to help guide 5th and 6th in. so I adjusted everything and it feels really smooth now and the plates guides the little notch into 5th and 6th while pushing down right goes into reverse smooth aswell. Considering throwing the trans back in and hoping for the best. I heard 5th and 6th should be good if gears 1-4 were. And like I said I was able to move forward a bit in 5th at a complete stop. So I’m hoping the adjustment was all it needed. Because actually moving it did not wanna engage at all, like 5th n 6th were neutral. Anything else I should do before I throw the trans back in? Clutch has been replaced.

Sounds like the shift lever was somehow rotated out 180 degrees? It does need to be disconnected from the trans if doing a clutch job.

One of the things I like to do on a clutch job is polish up all the slides (mating surfaces) on the cast iron clutch fork + TB carrier. Depending on service time/conditions, the mating surfaces get galled up, and even with proper grease you can feel added resistance in the clutch pedal. Some light sanding and a heavy polishing/buffing wheel on a bench grinder with some rouge really makes a big difference in operation after install. I like to use Honda Urea grease for all the clutch fork components, works great!

If you want a stiffer shifter return spring feel, I recommend the GKtech kit, best to do the install with the trans out of the vehicle, but it can be done with it installed (just a PITA).
I also recommend the GKtech trans mount stiffener kit (poly inserts), really helps remove slop from the drivetrain without creating NVH.

Good Luck!
