Default 5th and 6th gear gone!

This is odd to me, but it doesn't really surprise me. Last night I was running a bike and when I went to go into 5th it wasnt there. 5th and 6th are like I am in nuetral if the car is rolling. If the car is sitting still, then I can feel the gears. My tranny is the 009 and I would of expected 3rd or 4th to go out but why did 5th or 6th? Anyone else have this problem?

I had the 5th gear grind and replaced the tranny. It's no uncommon. I doubt it's gone, though.

The gear is not griding because....its not there. I know griding is a common problem, but the gear is literally not there if I am rolling. It is like I am putting the car into nuetral.

We lost 3rd gear on ZippyZ's track car a few weeks ago at Road Atlanta. but never heard of breaking two gears at once. That takes some serious talent.

Nice to have a second neutral...isnt it? You should have had us keep the power at 500whp'ish....you had to use 600whp'ish.

You either broke a shift fork, or simply broke the roll pin that connects the 5/6 fork to the 5/6 rail. while anything is 'possible' I'd bet anything that it's one of these things, most likely the roll pin, followed by the fork. 90% it's the roll pin, 10% it's the fork, those are the odds I'm giving it.

5th gear is the initial reduction gear in the transmission. If your car still works in gears 1-4 then that means 5th gear is still intact. If you broke 5th gear then the only gear which would work in your car would be 6th.

i havent inspected my broken tranny in as much detail as i should of, but i believe there are a few counter gears that are copper braised together (potential breaking point)..in the 3rd gear loss scenario, the 3rd counter gear breaks apart from the braised other portion... maybe a similar scenario in the sequela that affects 5th and 6th..anyone?

The 5th gear engagement teeth are brazed on and could potentially break (though HIGHLY unlikely). That's impossible in the situation he's describing though, if that happened then he would have no working gears besides 6th, because 5th is engaged (locked to the shaft) when the car is in all gears except 6th (because 5th is the initial reduction gear).

btw todd I'm Neal, BriGuyMax's buddy who's always over there working on his car when he calls you

nah the **** for brains mechanics just replaced it.. but now my 009 is/was grinding and when i went WOT it would pop out of gear (same symptoms before 5th and 6th went) .. but after i got my car back from MRC with the built motor.. it hasn't done it .. you think maybe it was an issue with the tranny and the old motor?

Which gear are you having trouble with and on which shaft? I don't recall having any issues in brian's trans but then again I use a hydraulic press whenever possible, gear puller is something I only use when the design of things prevents the use of the press.

You check the tranny fluid? I've had the "gear popping out" on our other car, but it was due to lack of tranny fluid. As soon as I dropped Redline MT-90 in, no more gear popping out.

I am giving my car 2 chances once my build is done, after thoses two I am parting it out and buying a Z06 or a used 07 911 turbo.

We need to rename the FI forum the "Look what I broke / fixing forum"

Had that happened to my transmission as well but I had the infamous 5th gear grind before it happened. Mechanic told me since the dealer told me to keep driving it becuase they couldn't find anything wrong the gear kept grinding until it wore all the teeth down until nothing was left.

Neal is the only person on this forum who to my knowledge has taken apart the transmission and might know the fix (he does describe his best guess above). Unfortunately he hasn't been on the forum since 2012.
