Default How do you think the Z would react to 110 octane fuel??????

I found a local gas station that sells 110 octane gas for $5.00 a gallon. Was wondering how the Z would react to that high of an octane. Wanted to know what you all thought about it. Should I give it a shot or stay away???

110 will frye your cats. it wont burn totally in the chamber and will collect in the cats till it burns up there.

stock compression anyway perfect octane(which is probably around 100) is only good for 2 or 3hp according to a dyno by SCC. not worth that price IMO(even assuming you just went 3:1 regular to racegas, still like 3.50 a gallon)

You only need as much octane as your motor requires. Anything over that is a waste and can actually hurt performance because it burns slower. Plus if it's leaded your cats and 02's will be ruined.
Thanks Mike

I tried 4 gallons of 110 oct mixed with 6 gallons of 87. Which comes out to be around 96oct mixed.. and the car felt much better. Felt like it acclerated a bit faster.

I thought that ANY fuel over 100 octane IS Leaded? Not sure how bad this is to your car, but I this 100 is good enough. I don't think U will get the most out of it without some sort of ECU tuning.

I remember my GTI, you could change the chip settings for 100 octane an you would gain around 20 horsepower.

It doesn't work like that.

I'm sad... the only gas station we have in town used to serve 93 octane. Now it's down to just 91..... my car doesn't feel rev happy as it did with 93 octane. :-(

I started a thread exactly like this a couple of months ago. What I was told was that the Z was meant to run on 91 octane. No more, no less. Here is the link.

Not necessarily. Just because a fuel is rated over 100 doesn't mean it's leaded. To get the really high levels of octane, above 110, the fuel is typically leaded.

To take advantage of very high octane fuel, you will need ECU tuning. The stock ECU doesn't know how to compensate for that kind of octane level. If you were running a turbo, high octane fuel is nice because it allows you to crank the boost up a bit.

You want to run the minimum amount of octane possible with out detonating at your given timing. The higher octane = slower burn = less horsepower, all else being equal.

You won't be able to tell a difference in a N/A car. Plus it will foul up your plugs and O2 sensors, and make them turn red with the additives they put in that stuff.

Its totally unnecessary for a N/A daily driver.

If you are running boost of N2o its a great idea.

I saw in the previous link that 12secz found octane booster to turn the plugs red but racing fuel?

I'm of the opinion that it may help, that the ECU can take advantage of >91 octane, but only by a small amount. Of course they're not going to program it to run 100 but given that 93 octane is pretty much standard across the US barring a few but I doubt they'd cripple the cars to only take advantage of 91. The only documentation I've seen from Nissan is in the Owner Manual stating "at least" 91 octane, a minimum value.

For kicks if you have a few dollars to spare, sure, try it. It's not going to be a huge difference for sure but it may do something. Just make sure it's not leaded.

Hey Flyer,

Because your people are the result of British penal colony inbreeding you may not be able to comprehend that the term "Japs" is offensive.

I run 90 octane Chevron gasoline in my Z. I wish we had even 91, but unfortunately 90 is the highest rating at any of the gas stations here

Seems to run just fine though, still.
