Question Are the shifter gates too close in the Z?

Hi everyone:

i was just thinking about something that happened to me recently while driving the Z...

I was driving on the Freeway and i was downshifting from 5th gear to what i presumed was Fourth, and i happened to go into 2nd gear instead, just briefly, but not before i caught myself with the clutch as i saw the RPMs shoot up.. and the car lurch a little... its happened a few times before, but i never really thought about it seriously until the most recent time....

has this happened to anyone else recently? i've driven stick shifts before on an S2000 and other high performance cars, but never have i really 'missed the gate' this bad, or this often..

anyone else have this common problem, of the gates being so close?

thanks!

Cheston

I'll admit I've done it twice since I've owned it...

Caught myself both times. Agreed the gates are VERY close...

However it's a joy to drive, and makes downshifting FAR easier. You just can't be lazy and not concentrate when shifting!!!

Nah. I love the gates on this car. I've come close to a mis-shift a couple of times, but that's happened to me on just about every car I've driven. Just takes some time to get used to it.

never mis-shifted in this car... the gates on the s2000 are much narrower than our car.

No, I don't think the gates are too close. Haven't mis-shifted yet, even with the short throw shifter.

Mis-shifting has happened to me a couple of times. But I love the Z's shifter, a bit smoother than my old Celica's shifter. Not only that, but a mis-shift in the Celica usually meant an engine blow out, so it could be a lot worse

They aren't too close.. but I almost did that once as well. Caught myself before I lifted the clutch pedal.

The 6-4 shift seems the worst. The way I make sure not to skip it:

Instead of pushing the shifter out of 6th and pulling left to get into 4th, pull straight down. The spring in the shifter will return the shifter to the center, and pulling straight down will always put you in 4th gear. The problem occurs when pulling the shifter left when you get out of 6th, and the shifter moves too far over, into the 2nd gear gate.

I have the G but I think the gearbox is pretty much the same. I've missed the 6 to 4 shift once so far (going into 2nd but being able to press the clutch back in before reving past redline) and I miss the 6 to 3 shift every once in a while.

In every other MT, I've been able to take the car out of gear, give it a split second to center itself in neutral and either pull down for 4th or push up for 3rd. In the G, I've tried this and I've gotten 5th when I've tried for 3rd coming out of 6th and I've gotten 2nd when I've tried for 4th. It's almost like I have to give it a little jiggle back and forth to make sure I have it centered.

I think the gates are very close together.

Yeah, like Krazy-2k, I got used to close gates in my 01' celica 6MT where a miss shift meant bending several valves if your really lucky.

Guess I'm just used to them gates being close.
