Default Best Flywheel

There's lots of lightwt flywheels for our cars out there. Which are better/good price/performance/problem-free, and which aren't so good? What's your experience?

I just picked up the JWT Aluminum Lightnened Flywheel from Courtesy Parts for $399.00. It should be here by the end of the week. I probably won't have it installed until next weekend. I ordered headers and the Unorthodox Racing pulley set along with it, so they are all being installed at the same time. I'll post when I get it installed.

Default Tilton 8lb

I've heard nothing but good things about the Tilton setup. Both Jeff and Jason @Performance are running them. It's not just the flywheel though, you have to get the clutch as well so you are looking at about $1350.

You can't beat 8lb, but does just the Tilton require a new clutch, or do they all?

I would have to say the best flywheel depends on what you are looking for. Do you care about drivability/life/racing performance etc...

The JWT unit seems fairly priced and is a good weight for street but it causes a sandy/chatter noise at idle.

JWT / NISMO / JUN / STILLEN will all use the factory clutch OR NISMO or JWT clutch... and the NISMO / JWT Clutch will bolt up to any of the above flywheels...

the TILTON requires a different clutch due to the fact it only has a 7.25" surface area...

best streetable combo (for now, :P ) is the JWT Flywheel and NISMO Clutch

best semi streetable is the TILTON set up listed above... and this set up will handle over 900HP to the wheels...

Yeah, it depends on what you want. Stock flywheel weighs close to 30 lbs. I started with the JWT 14 lb. aluminum flywheel and stock clutch. It is good, but not great. Had some stalling problems, but still very streetable.

Then I switched to Tilton 8 lb. Flywheel & Rally Clutch. It is great, but difficult to drive on the street. Very hard to launch from a dead stop. Once you are rolling, it is fine. You need to be aware of the streetability issue before going with Tilton. I have gotten good at launching mine, but even I kill it now and then. Revs like a banshee. I love it.

esemes, so you paid the labor to put it on and then take it off? Yikes! I guess I don't hear the noise people are talking about frequently enough (maybe once a day at most) w/ my JWT setup for it to bother me.

Is changing the flywheel a DIY mod, or something that would need to be done at a shop?

The Jun weighs 14 lbs and does chatter that much. No one I had in my car has ever noticed it by themselves. I have had to tell them to listen for the chatter for them to notice it.

Cost of Jun flywheel? Do you need to replace clutch?

JUN flywheel is around 395USD + shipping cost at www.takakaira.co.jp.... and you don't need to replace clutch at all! I have been running it for 1 over month already, no problem!

cheers,

richie

I have had the Jun on for about a year - 12,000 miles and I am happy with it - a little extra chatter at idle.

From what I hear the JWT might make a bit more noise, but the nice thing about is that you can just buy a new insert vs. have to replace the whole thing down the road....
