Default How strong is our Motor?

OK, short story, racing an SVT Mustang tonight on the way home from work. I was tired but did it anyways. ****er kept pushing me. So we went from a 10mph roll and off we go, pulled about 1/4 car lenth on him shift into second kept inching away then it happend, the car slowed down slightly shift light came on looked down and i was at like 7500rpm or around there! anyways i get home and the engine really isnt making strange noises or acting funny only thing i noticed was it ideling a little rough. This ideling could have been from the borla exhaust and cats and kenitex plenum all being put on. Maybe i didnt notice it before.

Question, could i have ****ed up my motor or did the car safe itself by slowing down. Is there something in the computer that prevent s us from taking it to far? Thanks for the help

Also, is an oil change a good idea after reaching high RPM's? Maybe this will help if i did cause any damage. Soory for the Newbie questions

Sounds like you just hit the rev limiter. Its there to prevent damage. Damage is possible but not likely after just one pop. After hard running I have also noticed rough idling. It takes the ECU a while to re-adjust. With rou mods it probably pulled some extra timing.

You can aslo just reset the ECU and see if the idle smooths up.
There is a link in the forum detailing how to reset the ECU via the ignition switch and throttle modulation (engine off of course).

Unless you've had the ECU reflashed to raise the rev limit, the ECU should have cut fuel to the engine at 6600 RPM. I'm not sure why you saw 7500 on the tach, maybe it was just overshoot.

Since you aren't hearing any bad noises, your engine is probably ok. If you're concerned, do change the oil and look (and smell) the old oil for anything unusual (combustion blowby products, water, metal particles, etc). You might even want to cut the oil filter open and see if anything unusual is trapped in there. Check the radiator too. Look (and smell) for anything unusual there.

If you're *really* concerned, then run a compression check too.
But it sounds like your engine is ok.

why do people think they do damangae to their engine by running it to 7500rpm. your engine is perfectly fine.

however, you never finished the story. did you win?

Default Overshoot

The tach in these cars definately will over-shoot actual revs. My tach under a WOT shift from first will appear top pop to ~7500rpm
even before the rev limiter pops. I the OEM rev limter before the tach. What you really want to avoid is mis-shifted downshifts , the engine breaking can easily for the revs way past the rev limiter set point. The rev limiter can not help in this case.

I was concerned cuz i just was. I was winning until this car slowed down. I think from reading this the fule was cut causingt he motor to stall. I would have won. I love this car. I will see him again, and when i do i will smoke him!

I wouldn't worry about it. I have hit my rev limiter a number of times. It's kind of surprising the first time it happens. Like G3po said deffinately watch out for mis-shifts. The rev limiter only cuts fuel so if you aren't giving it gas it can deffinately rev way to high (ie. downshift from 6 to 2 by accident.). I had my 240 up to like 8000 rpm and no damage was done, scared the crap out of me though.

Default fuel cut

The first time I hit the rev limiter in 5th , scared the crap out of me, at >140 , i'm not paying much mind to the tach. . Thought I blew a tire or something.

If you are worried about engine damage...you could aways install one of these. sorry for the shameless plug.
