Default Have You Upgraded Your Torque Coverter?

i've been looking into having my torque coverter modified by edge racing. for those of you who have done it, was there a noticable difference in performance? they claim a minimum .5 second decrease in the 1/4 mile. did that claim hold up?

where you satisfied with the overall result?

and finally, which of the 3 options did you go with. mild street edge, street edge or pro edge?

thanks for the assistance.

I have never been satisfied with a high stall converter on a daily driver. Great on the track but they tend to make the shifts feel mushy during normal use.

I haven't changed my TC. But, in general, the closer you get to the where the engine's max torque is the more twitchy your throttle will be because the TC will want to be at the high stall speed as it starts turning the driveshaft. All that torque is great for racing but not so great for regular street driving. I would check with Edge Racing to see what speed they would recommend. Let them know what you want to do and they can recommend a stall speed that will still give you some performance gains without sacrificing street driveability.

It would be just like adding a race clutch to a street car. Also, with the valve body upgrade and the tq converter together, the shifts should feel firmer. If you slam the gas everytime you drive, then sure it will feel jumpy. I would get it, it will help out alot. If not sure, at least get the mild or street verison. They shouldn't be too bad.

i was looking into getting the street version. pro street sounds like too much, and the mild street might not be enough. i'd rather have it where its a bit too much then a too little you know what i mean? still up for debate though.

ill probably get the valve body upgrade down the line, but im focusing on the tc for now.

A new torque converter with installation cost will run about $800 to $1000.

Booger has FI so be cautious of the numbers when thinking N/A. The only thing holding me back on the Edge Racing TC is that they use your stock converter, so if you are not happy with the results you are SOL! I will more than likely try the rear end and the valve body before the TC. Eventually there will be aftermarket TCs for us to choose from that will not require our stock one. That is when I will become more interested.

IMO I agree with zzya, do the valve body first. I think $1000 to gain 400 rpm's at the launch is not worth it. If your looking at 1/4 mile times, I am sure their is a better way to lower your E.T.'s for a grand.

I also think the valve body upgrade will be more "bang for your buck" in a well-rounded street car...but neither of these upgrade is particularly cheap and you're kinda taking a big risk both ways as both use a modified version of your stock piece...

the actual increase in rpm is 400-600. that is a true stall increase. that and the stock tc is tweaked so theres no slipping when you brake torque. i think both of those combined will do wonders for the tc. a .5 to 1.0 second decrease in the 1/4 mile for $1000 is a great bang for the buck imo. its specially nice for the people that like to say n/a. im not one of them though.

i guess the valve body upgrade is next up. its seems like it goes hand in hand with the tc upgrade?

A valve body upgrade will improve your shift quality and shift speed but, there is nothing, short of FI, that will put as much torque down to the ground as a high stall TC for less than a $1000. A valve body upgrade should probably be installed in conjunction with the new TC or it should be the next mod.

actually. the reason why im getting this mod is to help out my nitrous system. torque the my middle name. a lot of people are going with 150+ shots, and i dont want to go that high. im at a 125 shot now, and i plan on dropping down to a 100 shot after i get the tc mod done. the 2 "should" balance out each other and i might even still be .2 to .3 faster.

anyone have any info on where i can get my valve body upgraded? cost?

it is official. im dropping off my car at the dealership tomorrow. wish me luck.

There are a couple other companys that do torque converters for the Z other then Edge Racing. SGP has a company that does tq converters for them for the Z. Also, there is always level ten. Thats who I had do all my work on my auto turbo civic. There are many more companys out there that will probably do it, but they will also probably need for you to send in your stock converter.
