Default Desperate need for titanium material

Does anyone know where I can buy titanium so I can modify/repair my exhaust.

I need something like 1" wide 0.08" thick and about 4ft long sheet.

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help guys.

The repair is for my amuse exhaust. The resonator sits quite low and unfortunately I collected a stray object on the road which made a nice dent in it.

So what I wanted to do was make a skid plate up for the resonator.

Rizk,

On a purely practical level, I think stainless steel 304 or 302 would be a better choice for the application. Titanium has the best stregnth to weight ratio. But for comparing Stainless with Ti, for any given thickness of sheet metal, stainless will have roughly the same stregnth and impact resistance. So it will do the same functional job as Ti. Stainless is denser and will weigh about 45% more but it will cost so much less and be so much easier to find and easier to weld.

Once you find Titanium you will need to find someone to cut, work and weld it. Not many shops can do this. They will charge you 10X what they would normally charge just because of the name "Titanium".

If you want the Ti for the bragging rights (nothing wrong with this) try to find titanium alloy 6AL4V. This particular alloy is a somewhat common, high quality, aerospace material and is much easier to weld. It doesn't crack when welded.

What ever you do, do not get the CP (chemically pure) titanium if you are welding it. The welds almost always crack and break.

Regular stainless steel 304 should be sufficent for the application but if you want the best (non-exotic) stainless steel, use alloy 316 or 321.

On the other hand if you want the most exotic, toughest and strongest material period. Use Hastelloy X, Inconel or Haynes 25. They are all insanly strong and very, very impact/abrasion resistant.

Hydrazine

Thanks for the info. The problem is that my Amuse exhaust is a full titanium exhaust and from what I understand is that you can only weld Ti to Ti and cannot use Stainless etc.

What I don't understand is that you see exhaust systems on the market that are Stainless but have a Ti exhaust tip. So if they can do it why can't I

If I had the option to use a another material to repair my exhaust then I would. I need something practical not a show pony. It has taken me 2 months to find some Ti and many thanks to dynamic6er.

I do know of someone that can do the work for me and understand the work involved compared to standard welding. I believe that the object needs to be capped and gased to be able to weld properly.

I ordered some 6AL4V from robat combat (thanks dynamic6er) so hopefully all goes well.

Cheers,
Michael

You do realize how they weld titanium right?

Might want to research it a bit further...

As far as I know it uses a different machine and technique to weld Ti. One thing that I have been told is that for example if you are welding a pipe they cap the ends of the pipe and inject a special gas into the pipe before welding.

All I know is it was god damn hard to find someone to do it for me and I have found 2. One of them does Ti work for the Air Force so he should know what he is doing. *I Hope*

He he, I still got some Ti screws in my right hand from a bad break of the fourth and fifth metacarpels. They are mine to keep for the rest of my life!
