Default High compression setup

I have a spare 350Z motor that I can play around with. Its not in a car and is already torn down. We've been tossing around some ideas here at the shop. Forced induction with forged internals is an obvious one. Another idea that Im not sure about is putting in higher compression pistons, say 11.5:1. Then installing cams and headers (which will be easy with the motor out of the car), maybe a plenum. I already have a popcharger and Injen dual exhaust. Then we would just swap motors. What Im wondering is what the gains would be like with a setup like this? Would the rods need to be changed? Does Technosquare have a reflash for something like this? Could it run on 92 octane? Has anyone done this? Thanks.

With pretty much any NA mod you could do the OEM Rods are more than adequate as lonf as you don't intend to build an 8k rpm endurance motor. Inorder to yield the real power out of this NA setup you will need to raise the rev limter to ~7200rpm which is fine with the OEM bottom end.

Id get a TechnoSquare reflash for the 7200 rev limiter.

I saw a BMI video where Esprit Japan built a NA 350z with 350 horsepower. It listed the engine mods as cams, high compression pistons, upgraded CPU, intake, exhaust, and cost $11,000.

High revving parts for this car cost rediculous amounts of money. The Nismo spec 2 cams list for $2500. I paid $125 for the Lev 3 TRD cam in my 22R-E!

I too am very interested in building a set up like this, but I think you can get a lot more bang for the buck from forced induction.

With the motor already out of the car, installing the cams, pistons, headers, etc, will be a piece of cake. Then all we have to do is swap and reflash and we are done. I know most likely FI will get you more "bang for the buck", I just thought about something a little different. How much can you get a set of 11.5:1 pistons for?

It says the Nismo competition heads increase the compression ratio to 12.0:1 with stock pistons. So, combined with the Esprit pistons, I'm guessing you would be running 13.5:1. Could you run that high on 93 octane?

ha HELL NO!. 13.5 TO 1, you will have to have notched or triangular topped pistons to make sure you have valve clearance. or else you'll bang your piston into the head and the valves and that doesn't look or sound pretty. But you would definetly have to run race gas, the most you could pull of is 12:1 on pump gas and that is with heavy ecu tuning.

Im looking for 12:1 or 12.5:1 comp pistons and no luck, anyone have any ideas?
Because Im going to use the vq 30 crank and rods in the 3.5 . And it will be a sweet 73.3 mm stroke rev machine. (3.150 new engine size) And it will lower the comp .So with those pistons it would be around 11:1 or 11.5:1
