Isn't DTS = projectors and DTR = reflectors?

If it was a true reflector housing, like the IS300, then a D2S bulb would be bad because the light is scattered all over the place.

So how are we suppose to know how many you drive with your headlights on?
If you mean how many hours do they last, i believe typical lifetime is about 3500+ hours. Let's say you drive an average of about 5 hours a day with your lights on, then that would be almost 2 years (estimate).
Price for the bulbs are around $100.

The pre-06 HIDs aren't true projectors... they designed them to utilize the reflectors on the sides of the lens as well as being focused through the lens. I think that's to increase the visibility for oncoming traffic. If you look at the assembly up close you'll notice that there are masking slats on the top and bottom of the bulb housing and probably the focal point is closer to the lens than inside the housing... this would cause a percentage of the light to be scattered by the masking slats and reflected by the two reflector arrays on either side. On the 06s the lens is much larger and I would guess that the lense has grooves on the back side which scatters a small percentage of light and allows the lens to be lit up enough to provide adequate illumination for oncoming traffic. If you reduced the amount of the top slat slightly, you'd probably get a bit more output but the side reflectors would dim. With the 06s they went with a motorized lower stat which cuts off the high beam portion thus they can go with a larger lens and elliminate the high beam section bellow. The pre-06 lens will be less efficient than the 06s... but how much is noticeable is questionable. Bi-Xenon assemblies have gotten much cheaper so it's no surprise that Nissan opted for it since headlights are a hot button for car enthusiasts... The type of bulb is a different subject all together... but if you use too week of a light source with a hybrid projector/reflector set-up, you'll get poor results. I don't know if the non HID headlights use the exact same projector assembly, but if so than that's probably the reason they chose that design; they could have one assembly for both options.

Lifetime isnt easily measured in hours, the number of on/off cycles will affect the life. Try not to turn them on and then off quickly, or cycle the engine with the lights on. Xenons need to "warm up" ..you'll notice when you first turn them on the color gradually changes.
