Default How the hell did the body shop buff THIS out?

The car's being painted and i paid the bodyshop an unexpected visit. Everything looked great, except for one thing: on the fender, there was this thing... picture a fairly large grain of dust, 1-2mm in diameter. Big enough to be visible from several feet away. Now, this thing was apparently stuck in the paint when they sprayed, so they took it out, leaving a hole of the same size. You can very clearly feel it when you run the finger across, so its not exactly small. Now, one of the owners told me that they're gonna repaint the fender, but it turned out that he lied because the other guy said that they're just gonna buff it out. Anyway, i visited again today and the thing is gone. They didn't repaint the fender and i was absolutely shocked to find that it just disappeared. I literally couldn't even see where it was! The question is: what the hell did they do? How on earth do you buff out a hole that's several mm deep? It wasn't a tiny surface scratch-type thing. Something i found alarming is that the clearcoat looked very dull in that whole area, but it could have been just dirt because the rest of the car looked very dusty by now.

Simple, you fill up the hole with several layers of paint, then buff the excess out to blend the cavity in. Same as you would do with a rock chip. Of course this has limitations, it won't fill a deep hole, but a few mm is no problem.

It sounds like you are talking about the pins put into a car to pull out a dent .. That is part of the normal procedure .. and they did repaint the fender .. after using bondo .. and sanding it down with really fine grit sand paper ..

I can't visualize a few mm's while sitting on the computer, but here's my guess. They wetsand the panel smooth. This is why the panel looked dull. They hadn't buffed it yet, which would leave the panel shiny. Just my $.02.

if they panal was dull they might not have shot the clear yet. the basecoat has no gloss that is what the clear does. all they had to do was shoot color over the bad place, and then clear it. no biggy

could have painted the spot... westanded it... and buff scratches with scratch remover. i'm saying this because i did this a few weeks ago to my hood. had lots of dings down to the primer. went over them with touch-up paint, wetsanded the areas with 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper to remove the overpaint and had my boy Mike buff the areas with a porter cable and some 3M scratch remover. if done right you shouldn't really be able to tell the difference assuming paint is matched.

its impossible to paint a car without dust or dirt falling on the paint. After my 300zx tt was painted. I sanded the car down with a DA(dual Action sander) the car looked like a chalk board. After three progressively lighter buffing sessions it came out like glass. Not to worry, it happens all the time, and buffing is perfectly acceptable. In fact if you car doesnt get buffed to remove the dirt it is not going to look nearly as good as it could.

Most likely, they wet sanded the area and then buffed it. That's usually how you get rid of dust, runs and orange peel.
