it helps guide the air under your car. it is very important to your aerodynamics.

Are you talking about the lower engine tray/cover or the front chin spoiler?

I took mine off, cause when I go over 140mph it tears away. I got sick of replaceing it so I took it off. My car does fine without it. I do plan on putting something else there to replace it, something a little stronger though.

I say get rid of the bumper too, just adds weight.

Nah, it's not a real diffuser, it's just a lower engine bay shroud; you'll be ok to run without it (but why?). It may help with aero a little, but it mostly just helps keep the engine bay clean. It's not shaped well enough and is too flexible to be a really functional diffueser, IMO. If you want to see a real front diffuser, look up the Top Secret unit.

its not a weight issue for me. I would rather keep it on, but its keeps detaching from my front bumper when i go at freeway speeds... so i either just take it off, or find a better way to hold it...

How does it detach? It's bolted on with like a dozen bolts. If they're pulling through, just replace the eyelets that the bolts screw into; they're probably stripped out. If you travel at high speed alot and have issues with it deforming/flapping that contributes to it's coming loose, there is also an aftermarket aluminum replacement piece you can get.

Does your car have the little chin spoiler piece on the little lip that sticks down fro the bumper right around where the bumper and shroud meet? If not, get it; it'll help direct airflow over the shroud so it won't catch so much.

I wouldn't recommend running without one altogether just for cleanliness issues. I've seen a Z that had been without one for a while and the engine bay was FILTHY.
