Racing seats: How do you install universal seats in the Z?
Hi guys:
I'm about to buy some seats for my Z, however they only come with "universal" sliders. What else will I need to install them to my car? Just FYI they are Cobra seats, and I'm not certain if you just drill your factory rails or what?
I'm really confused about this. I'm also selling my factory seats..so what should I keep and what should I sell bracket wise? Basically...what all do I need to buy to install them if anything...and from where?
All help is appreciated I'm really clueless about this b/c they wont get them shipped for a bit.
Thanks, and merry xmas to all..

I did some reading and it seems like some people just bolt the universal sliders to the floor. What is the point of this? Doesn't that mean you dont even need the brackets? What are the pros/cons of doing this???
Also, if I just buy some sparco or recaro brackets...willl they work with any seat?

there is nothing that you can really use on the stock seats besides those seat belt buckles...
And what universal slider are you talking about? Each car has different floor design and hence each of them needs to use a specific slider designed to fit to the floor.... You will most likely need to alter those so-called "universal" rails/sliders to fit our 350Z floor and make them leveled at each side before you can put your new seats on... that's an expensive job... so you might as well buy those rails that are already design for our Z...
I have got recaro spg pole position fitted and am using recaro rails... they are great.. just a bit too high to my likings, so I custom made those side adaptors (bucket seats are different from those reclineables, i need side adaptors) to go as low as possible... you will need to ask your seat supplier if you can be able to use those sparco and recaro rails though... it is better to buy a pre-made ones to save your time and it is safer too
Merry X'mas!

Oh ok, thansk for the help guys. I was looking at different sites. So brackets usually bolt on to the base of the seat then right? I'm not sure they make a bracket for the Z yet..so I'm looking at worst case where I would go or what I would do. What would a custom job cost for a pair of brackets + install? Or perhaps hacking those sliders that come with it?
I'm really confused...so sliders=mounting bracket? =/
Thanks much, these ARE reclineable seats.

Sorry I keep coming up with more and more questions...
but what are the chances that I would be able to just re-drill the factory brackets to make them fit?
Thanks! I will not be auto-xing the car or anything, I just want the seats to work in my car.

Well, i think the best way to go about this is to wait until you get the seats/sliders in, then take your seat out and just try to see what will fit and what won't from there. Take alot of pics if you aren't sure on things, then post them up here for everyone to try and help you out. Alot of times the universal sliders are meant to bolt to another bracket that would be car specific. With the knowledge base here i'm sure we'll be able to help you out once you get them in. Remember, the best way to do it, is to take your time and not make any rash decisions and destroy anything you may want later. It really seems like this is an issue with bolting non buckets into Z's without having you sit up too high...Truthfully, ask Sharif. When i walked through the shop there was a Z there with cobra reclineable seats installed... I'm sure he can refer you to that member and get things figured out that way.
whatever you figure out, post the results for everyone to see.

Z1, first thanks for all your help. They are Cobra Misanos.
Yeah that sounds excellent and rational...(what I was leaning towards also). I don't have the money for the brackets right now, I wasn't expecting an extra $300 bucks in brackets. I am sure I can fab them for much less than that.
Especially b/c from what I have read the Cobra brackets are just HORRIBLE.

Heres an idea.
When you get your seats, take your sliders and your stock seat to a machine shop. Tell them you need these to fit in your car. They will cut/weld/create a whole new bracket for you. The sliders bolt to the seat and bolt onto your new brackets. Then bolt them to the floor of the Z. The purpose of taking your stock seat so they know where to place holes in your new bracket.
I did this with my 1998 eclipse last year, and it cost me about $40. Any machine shop can do this. I spray painted the brackets flat black then also because there usually all brown and gray and ugly.
hope this helps.
