Default Passenger Air Bag Light

Hello,

I'm considering buying a new Z and have a question. In the 2006 I saw a light up near the roof/sunglass holder that says "Passenger airbag". Can you tell me the purpose of that?

I have an 8 year old I would like to take in the car once in awhile and I was wondering if the Z had one of those newer weight sensing systems that turn the airbag off if it senses a child's weight in the passenger seat?

Thanks for the help!!!

Do you have a pic of this light? I havent seen such a light before. And no, the Z doesnt have any sensor to disable the airbag, you will need to purchase a kit from the dealer to disable/enable it.

No, sorry I don't have a pic. I noticed it on a 2006 Touring Roadster and then walked over to a base coupe and verified it had it also.

It definitely looks like once of those lights that comes on when the passenger airbag is off.

My Ford pickup has that feature.

The Z does not. There are only a few lights/buttons up by the mirror. The homelink buttons, auto-dimming button, and lights for the interior. Thats it.

Thanks Camaro. I know there is something there. I am not going nuts

Maybe it was something that is new for 07 and was added to late production 06's???

I will be back at the dealership in the next day or so and I'll see if I can snag a picture of it.

I confirmed this at the dealer today. He had a Daytona Blue base Z (build date of 8/06) and a Silverstone Roadster (build date of 9/06). Both cars had a little black "module" connected by a wire right below the sunglass holder. It said "Pass Airbag" on the right hand side. We grabbed the key and turned the ignition on. The light "Pass Airbag" lights up and also the word "off" with a little picture next to it. After the a few seconds the light goes away. I then put some pressure on the seat with my hand (to simulate the weight of a child) and then the light came back on.

So apparently late model 06's (and the new 07) Z will have a weight sensing passenger seat that will disable the passenger airbag if a child is seated.

Good news for Z drivers with kids.

FWIW, we checked a used 06 Enthusiast on the lot (build date of 11/05) and it did not have the module.

hmm, thats news to me. I wasnt aware of any mid-year changes like that. Its nice to see that Nissan is now including the hardware for the airbags. I wonder how they fit the module into the current space. I'd like to see pics of this.

Yes, there is a weight sensing system for passenger seat.
I believe if the passenger's weight is less than 90 lbs or so, the light comes on and the airbag won't deploy in case of accident. If the passenger's weight exceeds 90lbs then the light doesn't come on.

These models with the passenger air bag monitor are officially 2006.5 model Z's. I confirmed this at the dealership Sunday as per the new owner's manual. Build date 8/06. This is the only change over the 2006

I have a 2006.5 model and was carrying a tire on my passenger seat. The airbag off light was on.

It is also mentioned in the manual page 1-37 a child, small adult or child restraint will illuminate the airbag off indicator.
