Default Auto Hatch?

Has anyone found a way to make the rear hatch open up completely when you hit the button on the remote.

Perhaps stronger pistons?

I'm not sure you would want that because they used to have that on Cadillacs - and the trunk would just flop open. I used to have to run and stop the trunk so that it wouldnt flop so hard on my mom's '94 Caddy Sedan DeVille. She has since had a '99 Eldorado and now an '02 DeVille and I noticed that Caddy doesnt make 'em like that anymore. You have to manually lift it. There must not be an 'in-between' (between manual-lift and auto-flop)cuz I'm sure Caddy would have gone that route.

This is something I've thought about - although its a little more complicated because those "stronger pistons" aren't hydraulic lifters, they're simply pressurized tubes to support the hatch.

If I had to guess step #1 is you'd have to change the way that the rear hatch opens - ie when u press the button it would have to also activate a linear actuator of some kind. Thats kinda the easy part - because to open you just need to push out. The trick would be how to make it close, because you don't want to be applying pressure to those motors that you don't have to (ie closing them when they're trying to lift).

Additionally, I think you might run in to problems when it comes time to lock the rear hatch - you probably wouldn't have enough force / momentum to close it up when you're ready. I do know there are a couple cars on the road these days that do have this style of "auto open/close" rear hatch - the one that comes to mind is the current Chrysler minivan. Also I think theres a Lincoln that does that too.

If I had to guess that it could be done by a pro, I'd say it might run you 6 or 7 hundred $$$ easy.

There's a weight in the rear hatch. If you install a spoiler, you're supposed to remove it. I wonder what would happen if you had no spoiler and no weight?
