The only detector that has a chance at detecting a laser shot that isn't pointed directly at the detector is the V1.

Belscort's (Escort and Beltronics merged years ago) M3 platform (STi, STi-R, STi-R+, 9500CI -not the 9500ix-, Redline) has caught up to and even surpassed the V1's great radar sensitivity.

But it's not even close when it comes to laser detection. V1 must have patented a pretty good laser-detection scheme.

Still, 90% of the time, if you get alerted to police laser, it's because you are being shot with laser and the LEO already has your speed. I have received laser alerts when another car was being shot in front of me. But it's rare.

No direct experience with redline, but I own a 9500ix and the V1 is better at detecting radar.

However, the 9500ix's GPS filtering makes for the quietest detector I have ever owned.

So what's the point of buying radar detectors other than V1 or Belscort M3 platforms if the other detectors aren't going to be able to detect cops until they are being shot and the cop already has their speed?

And i guess radar detectors are not really a helpful tool to avoiding cops at all times.

LEO'S still use radar more than laser in most places, and quality radar detectors help a lot with many radar encounters.
