What do you consider absurd? I have the Beltronics v995 and I love it. It's saved me countless times. Retail price goes for about $299.

I always figure that you only buy quality once.

For $300-$400 you can buy the best radar detectors made.

I'm assuming that you're buying a detector to avoid having to get pulled over, searched, hassled, ticketed, showing up to court/paying a hefty speeding fine, getting points put onto your license and paying higher insurance costs. The detector will last you years and years worth of use so figure for about $0.25 per day or so you're covered with the best.

I have a pair of V1's.

My detector was turned off and I ran through a photo-radar trap a while back. I was allegedly travelling at 49mph in a 35mph zone. If convicted, the fine would have been $275.00!! Avoiding one or two tickets makes it easy to cost-justify buying the best detector you can find.
If you check the comparison tests, you'll find the same two products always seem to be at the top of the list. Happy shopping.

Man, that's high for where you live. I've had a fine of $175 for doing 67 in a 45.

Visage- We don't have a sales tax and we don't pay registration taxes based on our vehicles value, like some states. They make up for it in other ways. Right now our Governor is pushing for a tax based on miles driven. Isn't that what the tax on gasoline is all about?

Back on topic: I'm a diehard Valentine 1 fan. It has saved me countless thousands of dollars over the years. I move it from my car(I have one of Mikes mounts that attaches to the Zs rearview mirror) to my wifes car when I drive it, to my motorcycle. With the remote volume control Valentine sells, I can run it through my helmet speakers.

In massachusetts, each speeding ticket you get will also give you on average an additional $2500 in insurance premiums over the next 5 years...

best bang for the buck......

IS THE BEST AND MOST LIKELY THE MOST EXPENSIVE ONE!!!!!

one ticket >>> the cost of a v-1, passport 8500x50, or a beltronics.

I personally have a v-1...range compares to 8500x50....I like the directional arrows. The new Beltronics is supposed to absolutely **** on every other radar...including the two previously mentioned. There's reviews of it on here....search.

How far in advance do you usually get a warning with the V1?

^^^Just depends on the area that you're in and where the radar is coming from.
