Anybody remove a non-Homelink rearview mirror (base Z)?
The homelink mirror have a small set-screw that hold the base to the mount stuck to the windshield.
The non-homelink mirror apparently snaps onto the mount and doesn't have the set-screw to hold it. There is a small hole in the base where I assume you'd stick a screwdriver or some other implement to pop the base loose from the mount.
I don't want to break the mount loose from the windshield and I don't want to break the base of the mirror. I've tried a dozen things up that hole and nothing seems to do the trick. Of course, I don't know what the trick is. FSM is no help.
Anybody know the key to getting it off?

It's bonded to the windshield.. I can't really think of anything besides using the same method you would for removing an emblem.
Edit: I reread and it sounds like you do not want to remove the mount. Are you talking about the arm that connects to the mirror?

Correct - I want to separate the base from the mount. I dicked around with it for 30 minutes yesterday and still haven't figured out the trick. I've got a couple buddies at one of the dealerships, I guess I'll take it over there and see if they can get one of the techs to show me the trick.

I took my base mirror off to replace with the Homelink. I used a very small flathead screwdriver and pushed from the bottom. There is a small catch that you can hear when you press the right spot. Then with the other hand, pull the mirror up. I was also scared of damaging the windshield or mount but it popped right off. (just the mirror)
Good luck.
Good luck.

Yes, I finally got it off by sticking a nail into the hole. There is a metal tab/spring that keeps it on the mount of the window. If you stick a nail up there, it lifts the tab enough to get started over the mount.

get a very small flathead and push into the hole. at the same time with the other hand grab the mirror base and wiggle and push up.
all your doing with the screw driver is pushing into the hold. theres a clip inside that holds onto the mount on your windshield, just push it in.
