the only way to separate the 2 halves of the lense is to heat them up....nothing else would even work
the rainbow is not from the heat - its from the degassing of the paint as it dries. In my case at least, it went away completely after a few days in the sun

Put on some polarized glasses or use a polarized filters and you'll see them on your headlights too. I'm guessing he had a circular polarized filter on the camera for these shots.
You won't normally see them with the naked eye.

I believe the rainbow effect is from a couple of things.
I had to redo my headlights completely due to me doing a half-assed job the first time.
The first time I had excessive "Rainbowing" on the headlights. It was even noticable without polarized glasses. It looked like ***. The second time around I made sure to let the paint completely cure before putting the light back together. I also scrubbed the inside of the clear headlight piece well to try to get off any kind of residue that might contribute to this effect.
The second time around there is no rainbow effect except when viewed through polarized lenses. As another person said, this is normal. I think it's an effect of both the clear plastic being "cooked" and the paint not curing enough before being sealed in the headlight. That's the only thing I can think of, since I was able to get mine to go partially away the second time around.

OK, so I think I am being dense here, but I still have a question regarding the turn signal bulbs modification.
I have an 03 and am thinking of buying 06 headlights (since my 03's got damaged). I did some searches and keep reading that this swap is plug & play. This is the only post I found that mentions this problem with the turn signal bulbs. Is that because you are re-using your 03 bulbs?
If I order the 06 headlights including all the bulbs that are supposed to come with them, will I still need to modify the turn signal bulbs?

OK, thanks. I will keep you in mind when it comes time to purchases the new headlights (waiting for a state contractor to pay out my claim for the damage their road work caused to my car). PM me if you offer any discounts.

1. remove the 6 plastic clips on top of the bumper.
2. turn the wheel all the way towards passenger side
3. pull open the plastic driver side wheel well splash guard just enough to get a 10mm socket in.
4. undo the two bolts holding the bumper on driver side
5. turn the wheel all the way towards driver side
6. pull open the plastic passenger side wheel well splash guard just enought to get a 10mm socket in.
7. undo the two bolts holding the bumper on passenger side
8. the bumper can now be pressed down enough to get the two bolts underneath the headlights.
9. unscrew the two bolts on each headlight and also the one on top
10. pull headlight half way out and unhook the electrical connection using a flat blade screwdriver.
11. put new lights in , *TEST*
12. reassemble everything in reverse order. The 06 headlights bolt right up to my 2004 without any issues
here's the finished product
lights off
lights on
lights off
lights off
parking lights on.
