Default Gas Tank

According to the owners manual my 07' Z has a 20.1 gallon gas tank. I've been very close to empty several times, less than 10 miles to empty according to the gauge in the car. But I've never put more than 17.xx gallons of gas into it and I always fill it up. So is there like 3 gallons of gas in reserve, or is the book wrong? I'd hate to run myself out of gas trying to find out. But it would be nice to know if there's a spare 3 gallons in there in case it's ever needed. That's an extra 60+ miles.

I remember there was this guy once that ran his Z on the dashed lines "--" (means you're at empty) for a full three days before the car stopped. I can't recall how many miles though.

I do it all the time. I've driven 110 miles on the dashed lines. To me, the orange light means I have about a week's left of driving yet.

Cars made in Europe: When the gas gage reads empty its empty.

Cars made in Japan and America: When the gas gage reads empty you can drive 100 miles.

It doesn't need to take premium, read your manual.

Guys you have a knock sensor in your engine. This will tell the ecu when there is detonation or also known as knock. If you put crap gas (anything under 91) then you will get knock. The ecu will pull time and richen up the fuel mixture to prevent it. This will suck for performance. Can you run cheap gas sure but you will have about 75% of your total performance. Knock is real bad and you will be trusting the knock sensor to pick up every knock and keep the engine safe. The 07 does have two of them but the 03-06 only have one.

So dont be cheap... pay the extra .20 cents a gallon.

I have an 03 and I put 93 to 91 (91 in Summer and 93 is winter since the price flactuates) but I don't think I would ever put 87 or even 89 in my car.... as the poster above me said that you will get knock and you might damage your engine.

So exactly how much is left when the gas light comes on, and how much is left when the needle is on the "E" line?

i never let my gauge needle go below half a tank when i'm around town. But if i'm driving cross country then I let it barely touch the E line good to know that i still have 100miles after the E line

That's about right. If I fill up immediately when the light comes on, I get about 17 gallons (2006 Z). Drive around a little and it's 17.5 to 18. I think they set it this way in case you are on the interstate and it comes on, you've got about 70 mile available. What sucks though is the fill up. I started turning the nozzle around 180 degress so it wouldn't shut the pump off after half a tank, and I've overflowed gas out twice now. I love this car, but it has way too many quirks for a mass produced sports car from a major maufacturer. Tire feathering, tranny issues, oil consumption, gas fillup, clutch issues, window grease streaking.... seems like there are a million of them

running a car near empty is bad on the fuel pump since there's no fuel there to dissipate the heat from it and keep it cool

Dunno about all of those issues. Maybe they fixed them for the 07', other than the clutch problem. I've had this Z since April of 07' and I'm still on the factory tires, but about to replace them (18k miles). They aren't feathered at all (I'd heard this was a huge problem). Actually the front tires are still very good. But the back are getting low on tread. No oil consumption problems in the least. Other than the gauge inaccuracy no problems with the gas tank. No window grease issues. Dunno man.

Maybe I got a car assembled on a day of the work week when none of the employees were hungover.

Edit: I forgot, there does seem to be a small problem with the sync in the tranny if I try to jump gears from like 2-3 to 5-6. Otherwise no problem if I go in order.
