Default I got the itch again

look very very closely and you might see the tiny blurry pin ****** marking the spots.

Im gonna light the headlight up like the sun

its the very very beginning of either greatness or disaster.

Ive made further progress, just enough to be relatively sure it will actually work. more pics will come, just teasing for now cause Im bored and the paint takes too long to dry.

had a setback.

kinda thought the LEDs would be the tough part, turns out painting it was... bubbled up and cracked and blah blah blah. spent today stripping it back down with some oven cleaner.

I have learned, if you black out the brights, you get NO light. I mean, just remove the bulb, cause its TOTALLY useless.

but now Im wondering what 18 high power LEDs would do for brights just cant figure a good way to mount them in there.

not much to show unfortunately.

just a bunch of holes drilled in a housing, no paint means no LEDs yet.

I really would like to have my brights back... but I really cant figure out how to make that happen... unless I straight up fab an entire panel into the existing housing to hold them... which Im not counting out just yet lol.

from what I can find, modern high beams are 2000-2500lumens. modern LEDs are maybe 70... 30 of them would make things interesting perhaps. but thats just plain expensive...

it would be unique for sure.

one thing about lights...........you have to worry about through distance. The leds can be bought in wide or narrow with high mcd but i doubt they can throw the light off into the distance like your brights would.

What you should probably be more concerned with is ft-candles. Is the brightness of the light at a given point. Say in your office, the light level is normally measured at about 3-3.5ft above the floor to be 50-100 ft candles. Get closer to the lamp and your FC will rise.

yeah, its always hard to really compare lumen numbers since there is no standard

Im thinking of using these little guys, 3 LEDs on a commercially available board

each one is supposed to give off over 100lumens, so that would be 300 per disk.

or predone

435lumens in a tiny package, at a pricetag of 18$ per.

just 6 or so would hypotheticly do the job... though I think like 15 would be even better.

mount them on a nice big slab of heatsink, and put another facing plate over with a diffuser over each trio. should look cool... and put out some serious light? or melt the headlight lol.

alright, I have decided an LED high beam is just beyond my means. a nifty project perhaps if I cared to spend 2grand sorting out what works and what doesnt and probably destroy a headlight or 2 in the process...

so Im keeping it simple, and making sure heat isnt an issue to worry about.

I know the paint has cracks in it, I dont know why, they wont fill in for some reason, whatever, not noticable if there isnt a flash to light them up.

well that seemed tame enough, nice appearance, but I want to light these suckers up. nothing says bright like 72 white LEDs keeping things visible at night.

working on the turn signal now, here is is formed and trimmed, gonna solder it now and wire it up. Im forgoing resistors cause Im lazy and I dont have any, so they will be slightly overdriven, should be ok for its needed life cycle.

of course the quartet of luxeon LEDs will remain for the main bulb, so the color will match, I just wanted to add some surface area to the light to make it more visible.

wired up, along with the vertical strip. the 72 LEDs will obviously take a bit more time to do.

I might be bias, but thus far, it has exceeded my every expectation.

not sure what I want to do with that hold in the headlight where the stock light would typicly go. I temporarily fitted an LED there, which isnt really sturdy or spaced right. not sure Im capable of filling in that hole or not.
