Paint 03 cubby to match 04 interior?
I am doing an 03 cubby/screen install and the color is a little off. That is something that would bother me so I want to paint it to match the rest of of the center console.
Anyone done this? What color did you use?
Sand, flat black, than clear?

you will need to paint the rest of the console. Don't use any gloss blacks. Use the Satin black from Duplicolor vinyl and interior paint. it looks really good and oem. If you want a very professional look, go order some SEM interior paint online. Make sure you use plastic adhesion promotor.

I am not too crafty at painting so I wouldnt want to risk painting the whole thing.
What my best choice for just the cubby itself?
Steps:
1. Plastic adhesion promoter
2. Satin black
3. Clear
??????

He exacto knifed the front piece of the panel out (not the entire door), and replaced it with the panel from the 04.
Check this thread for the paint-it solution:

Interesting, it doesnt look like you can just cut it out like that. You might be able to pop it off. I would have to look at both doors when I take it out to see if I can pop one off and put it on the other.

I switched doors a few years back, got pics somewhere on this board but who knows where now.
It is not an easy switch, it takes some fabrication to get it all to work like stock. It required parts from both the old and new door be cut with a dremel and a random scrap metal. After years of up and down, mine still works well.
An option for paint is to go to an automotive paint store. Many have a gun that can read the surface color and come up with the code. Then if you don't have a spray kit, you can even have it pumped into spray cans.

I would love to see pictures if you every find some.
It didnt look like an easy job looking at the 03 door. I'm not too crafty so I probably wouldnt be able to pull it off.

I could not find any posted pics so I dug these up from 2006-07-06
What I remember looking at them is:
The lower half of the inside of the door, where the lid locking tab is, is from the 04 door. It needs to be cut so it does not interfere with the top of the door. It then attaches with the same screws with no other modification.
On the top of the 03 door, I removed the metal bracket by carefully grinding off the melt rivets with a dremel. I then took a piece of steal, maybe an inch long by 1/4 wide, bent it around a tiny screwdriver for shape drilled it and riveted it to the metal bracket. I then used plastic cut from the 04 door to replace the melt rivet using a soldering iron for heat (did this sort of like soldering only I heated the scrap as I fed it and not the door).
Then it is just a matter of attaching the lid to the spring so it rolls in properly.
(see attached pics)
-----------------------
Thinking about it, if all for this seems like to much, I think there is an easier way if you dont need it retracting automatically with the spring (you can manage lifting the door yourself and pushing it into the slot).
I think it may be fairly easy to rig up some magnets on the top inside edge of the door and the top/back of door frame to hold the door in the up position when open. If you paid close attention to alignment, it might work to have the magnets only on the top/back of the enclosure and have it stick to the metal on the inside of the door. Perhaps a pair of small magnets on the inside of the door and frame in P/P orientation to work as a spring to pop the door when the button is pushed. I think it would still seem like a factory setup if someone took their time putting it together.
Thinking about it, I might have done this instead of the spring for simplicity, if I was doing it today.
Hope this helps.

That was very helpful. I think I might actually try to go this route.
One thing I am not clear about.
Not sure what you mean here. What am I cutting?
And does it still work and look good today?

If you look in the first pic. The part that holds the locking mechanism came off the 04 door. Normally this part is the same size as the whole door but it wont fit on the 03 door this way so it needs to be cut. You will know what I am talking about when you dig into it.
It still looks and works like stock and for the last year and a half, I was opening and closing it every day when I was parking downtown.
